Removing old heatsink..

Post by Jstyr »

I bought a volcano 7 heatsink and fan awhile back for my processor but never installed it. I figure I'd better use the damn thing so I'm wondering.......

How the hell do I get the old heatsink off the chip? What's the best way to clear any of that old thermal pad stuff that's left on the proc? How much Arctic Silver should I apply to the bottom of the heatsink? Should I also apply it to the top of the chip?

I used to know all this at one time but I've totally forgotten. I had bookmarked a site with a great tutorial on heatsink replacement, lapping and whatnot but lost it when I reformatted. If anyone has some advice or a link to a site I'd be grateful....Danke!!

to take off the old one i think you will need a screwdriver (inmoscases) and you will need to press down and move around abit to get it free.

the best way to get it off the cpu is with rubbing alcohol and a qtip is what i use then get a plastic bag and put just a slight bit on the core and put ur finger in the plastic bag and spread it evenly over the core
and popon the new hs and viola

Keine Ursache! :)

Another solution is to use dental floss to remove the old heatsink.

Isopropyl alcohol and a razor blade can get most of the old thermal material off.

Here're the instructions for Arctic Silver:

Use a blowdryer to seperate the HS from the chip. Use acetone first for the tape and 99% pure isopropyl alcohol to remove the residue. It does'nt get better than this. We use it at work all the time. :D

DO NOT use a plastic bag on the core. Do you realize how much static that generates? <HINT> Up to 20,000 volts. CPU's use transistors made of positive and negativly charged molecules hermeticly sealed in the core. ESD is a serious issues with microprocesors and IC's alike.
