hi, i had the exact same problem except i had 2cdroms
it just went away and i think its due to:
did you install the via 4in1s?
i did and i think thats what screwed it up...when i very first boot up (first 30sec) i could see the cdroms fine, but after a few seconds they would go away with that ! in the device manager
try disabling your unused com/printer ports in ur bios
try choosing "standard pc" instead of ACPI
(right click my computer>chose pc>right click 'advanced computer or acpi or whatever'>click update driver>click i choose driver to install>click show all hardware>click standard pc>then reboot
WARNING: it reinstalls all your hardware, but if you had it installed first it will find those drivers, so you dont have to reinstall everything
(didnt wantcha to freak out)
but im not absolutely certain that was the thing that solved it, but it really got frusterating
also, try seeing if u have the power on one drive split off to the next which could maybe (?) not be giveing your cdroms enough power...
just not absolutely shure though
sorry

Damnit... that was what I was going to say. It sounds like your power is OK since it is coming in and out and you say it sounds alive.
Make sure you have the jumpers set up correctly on this CDROM and any others that you have in there.
Good luck.
