The team was able to transfer uncompressed data at 923 megabits per second for 58 seconds from Sunnyvale, California, to Amsterdam, Netherlands. That's about 3,500 times faster than a typical Internet broadband connection. The record could not have been achieved without “tweaking assistance” from SpeedGuide.net. Our heartfelt thanks to everyone at SpeedGuide.

Not that it isn't a great achievement, but such a high speed connection would obviously be of little use to the average joe user. As no pc would be able to write the data fast enough to fully utilize such a connection. I guess that's why they are touting this sort of connection for universities and hospitals as they can afford the massive data centers required for this type of connection.
Respect it.

Actually there is a benefit.....How about streaming HDTV content? Of course that's more than what would be needed but imagine your ISP service also supplying HDTV movies....Over DSL and thirty miles from the hub.

I loooove Kazaa...it's an easy money maker for us...customer calls in, complaining of slow speeds...I go out, turn off their Kazaa that has 27 uploads in progress, and charge them $49.95 for the truck roll

True, but I was refering to the connection actually going to someone's house and connecting it up to their PC as some other people suggested and using it to download porn DVD's and other types of things
Now talking about streaming media which is a sort of read it and forget it type of a deal largely memory and CPU intensive then you'd be able to use the connection to it's fullest.
