True, plus I know what I'm downloading. Some people download indiscriminately and NEED to have it on all the time.

I use e-trust on one comp and AVG on the others.
I learned the hard way that even trusted software can be compromised (by a hacker)....thankfully, my av software did the job.
I have also been hit with email viruses from people right here on SG. Since I am in their address book, the virus gets sent to me. While I have not been infected with one of these yet.....it took me time to get rid of them.
I run a weekly housecall check as well. Not all av proggies are created equal or have the av definition files up to date (AVG).

Does stuff like this change anyone's mind?
Not really, I've seen most programs fail at one time or another. I've seen and read tons of situations where one software picked up where the other didn't. Happens...there's a lot of variables.
One thing I believe has to go hand in hand....is keeping your Windows Updates up to date.....todays virus's take advantage of known vulnerabilities in operating systems and software...so fixing those issues....less chance a virus can do damage to your system.
My system, and just about all my clients use Symantec. Every day I go onsite, I'm checking their virus logs, and seeing that it's doing it's job. I've only had it fail me once on a single network...client had a couple of older Win95 machines on that network...the day Klez came out they go whacked....but the rest of his, and all my other networks....Symantec did it's job.
We don't know if Brembo was up to date, windows was updated, he may have disabled real time file protection also....who knows.

There are people, right in this thread, that choose to NOT use an AV proggie.
The way I look at it is this...if you are unprotected, then are you are not being a good netizen because now the virus is one step closer to me.

Yep- to not use A/V of some kind is simply ridiculous. "I'm careful" "I know what I'm downloading" is BS.... you cannot predict or protect from viruses by caution alone. Do you use E-Mail? Do you surf the WEB? If so, you are vulnerable and exposed, and able to propogate viruses to the rest of the internet community. It's incredible to me that seemingly intelligent, informed people do not use A/V software. The premise of "it slows me down" is bunk.... what great breathtaking apps are you running that can't handle the overhead?
Ignorance.

AVG here.
Really?
Occasional (2 or3) visits a year to an online scanner keeps me happy.
mountainman.... If you check out the homepage for Grisoft there is a list of updates that run in order of release.
AVG get's updated more regularly than people realise. This last update (not the repair) was the longest time without one I can remember.
AVG has warned me too often about a virus to be without it running in the background.

100% correct...I always believe in them. I didn't say that they didn't work, I didn't say that I don't like them.
I took your thread as a stab at Symantec because his (you link points to) computer was supposedly using it and it seemed to fail in it's protection. I was just stating that I've seen all the brands fail at one time or another. And from my experience, there's a lot of other factors which add up to the effectiveness of an anti-virus program, regardless of brand.
I'm lucky enough to be able to run Symantecs Corporate Edition at home, as I have a promo copy from a Symantec promo Ingram Micro was having when you bought Symantecs versions of Nexland routers. Else, I'd probably not spend the $ to run this package at home, and I'd have to suffer more of a performance hit from their Pro version or standard versions of NAV.
I choose Symantecs software for my clients, because I can install it, set it's options, and let it be for a good year until upgrade time again. I don't have to worry about the users having to update it, I don't have to worry about any user intervention...because no matter how much I try to educate them, a good percentage will not go through the effort of doing the updates on their own.

The corporate versions of AV's are much better as they are not loaded down with all of the crap that PC versions are. They can get away with it on home users but the the system admins wouldn't tolerate it...
For my home network, I use Norton (Symantec) Corporate... You can find it ~$300 for 1 license, or ~$800 for 25...
Expensive?
Well, it all depends how valuable you consider your data...
I would not load any non-corporate version of any Norton/Symantec prog on a box of mine...

I really liked their 2001 and 2002 home consumer products. I do have to admit, the couple of times I've played with 2003, both standard, and pro versions, I have found it sluggish. I haven't had time to play with it in detail yet....as in tweak, find various settings for best performance.

No....I'm taking at stab at those who knowingly refuse to use real time virus protection. I just fin it odd that these people are willing to be compromised for up to 7 days(run a av scan weekly)....well 7 days is all anyone would ever need to get what they want from you or to destroy your data.
I'm not implying you or the success or failure of any product...simply saying that I find it odd that people are willing to sacrifice security for speed.

Gotcha...understood...and totally agree with you. Gone are the days of the old fashioned approach to the little buggers, where a bootup scan or weekly scan was all you needed.
Today...it's all about real time protection...they come in and you're infected within milliseconds...and it's spread across your network within seconds.

Then, IMO, you
a) don't ever get e-mail
b) reformat frequently (masking that you ever had one)
c) have them, and don't know.
d) are quite possibly the luckiest person on the face of the earth... would you pick some Lotto numbers for me??
It is incredibly foolish to not run Anti-Virus software of some kind. If you run Windows; and use Outlook or OE recv'g HTML formatted mail, then you have likely contracted one, and just never knew it. Viruses today do not have to come as attachments- they are embedded in the message itself.
Not all A/V apps are the same, that's for sure. Their ability to catch them, and catch them quick enough, varies greatly from product to product, especially when scanning e-mail and HTML embedded viruses.
I just installed Norton Corporate 8.0 with A/V for Exchange at a site this weekend. They had an old version of CA Innoculan ( yech!) . Here's what I found in the Exchange stores (and they didn't think they ever got viruses either

I don't know how she gets them, all come from a Yahoo account, probably faked somehow. All from some spam bulls**t.
And I don't have to deal with one every day, it automatically gets taken care of...

I do run a scan from time to time ... just not on a regular basis. I can honestly say that I have not gotten a virus before. You say I may have one and not know it ... but I get the latest data file and scan with it and have never had any virii detected on my system. You may find this hard to believe ... but I am telling you the truth.
I did the scans you see in the pics below and as you can see ... I did not have any now either. If I had them and did not know ... wouldn't they show up in here? If not ... how would I know?

of course i delete any e-mail that looks funny or is from someone i do not know, and add them to my blocked senders list.
never had a virus as far as i know, had a few alarms at some pron sites but lucky i guess ?

Great!!!! Good for you!!!!!
You aren't the problem here man.....the problem is the message. While you are quite proficient with computers.....the majority of computer users are NOT!!!!
Why do we have things such as Code Red and the like? Because people failed to patch their systems after being repeatedly told to do so to avoid the friggin flaw/exploit.......and even after it happened, people still refused to patch their systems. Then comes Slammer......
I think, that as a tech oriented and PG-13 site, that we should be sending the right message....and that is to use good, sound security practices. It's the newbie and novice crowd out there that spreads this junk....and then it starts to affect us indirectly or quite possibly directly. Look at Slammer......we couldn't even get on SG that night! And it was due to people not being proactive.....a simple friggin patch could have avoided most of the problems.
So I surely do hope that you see I'm NOT attacking you....or anyone else for that matter....I'm simply concerned with the message that we are putting forth.

I totally understand where you are coming from. I was NOT trying to say that one should NOT use a virus scan ...
I was just surprised that Snuf's wife was getting a virus in her email daily. I have heard of people getting them in their emails ... just not every day. Just caught me off guard.
I agree with your statement that we need to set good examples for the other people in the forum. I also agree that people should keep their systems up to date ... via Windows update or however else they want to do it. I keep mine updated constantly.
I used to run Windows ME and never had a minutes trouble with it ... WHY? ... because I kept it updated and clean. I constantly defragged and made sure I kept the temp files cleaned out. Maintainance ... the key to a good running machine.
So guys ... bottom line ... run those virus scans ... it only takes a few minutes and it could really save you a lot of work.

oh GAWD....another WinME user with no troubles.......amazing!!!!
I too ran WinME for the longest time with 0 problems....it's Win98SE Part II lol.
I could go on and on about how good WinME is when you take care of it......but most people believe the negative hype.
Hey mwkirchner,
I receive ~25 or so, virus sent to me on a daily basis. They come in waves... Then we reset what gets blocked and update the AV for the server, and they will ease up for a few days...
No doubts, being an admin for SG, I am a target... However, thankfully, I always seem to manage to stay 1 step ahead of them by practicing safe broadbanding...
As previously mentioned, you do not have to open an attachment to receive a nasty. Just visit certain sites and you will be had...
Do keep in mind that virus are not the only nasties on the net...
Knowledge is your best defense...
