Question!

Post by Kith »

Hey all! Alright Have a few questions...

1)I have a Cable modem. Connected to the modem is a Linksys BEFSR41 - 4 port Router. Connected to the router is a hub, The 3 workstations are connected to the router, and 1 into the hub.

Is this the way you would do it?

2) I like keeping my computer VERY simple, meaning, I only use the bare bone progams I need. The outcome of this is better proformence. However, I use no Anti Vrius, and no Firewall. I was thinking, I should at lest use a Firewall, but can't decide on one. I really want one, thats easy to use and uses VERY LITTLE system resources, Also could running this firewall on my computer, protect the others?

I'll leave someone else answer the question but a good antivirus program is far more important then a firewall with the router! ;)

The Linksys EtherFast® Cable/DSL Router:

Image

Connects to a Broadband Modem Or to An Ethernet Backbone
Equipped With a 4-Port 10/100 Switch

Connects All of Your PCs to the Internet With Only One Purchased WAN IP Address

Creates a NAT Firewall to Protect Your PCs From Outside Intruders
As there is a firewall already there, go with what has already been suggested by Blebs and get yourself an AV program. The only thing a software firewall will see with the NAT firewall in place is outgoing requests from what is already on your system.

If you want a freebie then go for AVG or maybe one of the options at http://www.wilders.org in their AntiVirus pages. (see links on left of home page.) AVG is linked there as well.
You may be surprised what an AV program will find, no matter how careful you may have been..

What do you suggest for AV progams?

Is F-Secure any good?

I prefer Norton AV. I also am set up for performance. I have Norton completely on manual, it consimes 0 resources until I manually scan a file, afterwhich, if I want, I can then disable it or end the processes, restoring memory.

Why Norton? Reputation, live-update, easy to install on multiple computers on a network if cancel the registration, stable, and never let me down. (I get approx 300 emails/day doing suport work)

There are some real good freeware AV apps, but sooner or later freeware app development dies off and then you must switch to a new product. Norton will be here for a long time.
