Can cold weather effect cable speeds?

Post by Illini25 »

I've been having bad pings for the last 3 days and my cable speed as dropped by half. :(

I've done trace routes to my isp and hop #6 from chi to ny is pinging really high. I've posted this problem in my isp's forum at bbr's and others are experiencing the same problem at the same hop. :( My isp (Insightbb) uses AT&T's backbone so they cant help me with anything until AT&T fixes it on there end.

I was just wondering if this recent cold could effect the speed and pings. I havent been able to play bf1942 for the last 4 nights and its really starting to upset me..... I need my bf1942 fix..lmao!!!

Anyways, Here's the link I posted in my isp's forum that will show you the trace route.

Thanks for any comments,

I would think the cold would help your ping if anything. But that just a guess

Well, yes and no. Temperature has no effect on the fiber connections, but it can affect things in the local cable plant. The nodes and amplifiers are all temperature compensated, but that doesn't handle the other issues associated with the cold, principaly coax connections coming loose, coax moving due to expansion and contraction.

Your problems start at your first hop. 117ms is an unacceptable average. You'll really need to beat on them, however, as their first response will be that pings of 100 ms are acceptable. Yes, they are - for a site on the other side of the country at 8 pm, but never on the first hop.

The ATT router is probably not an issue. It is configured to give lower priority to ICMP packets. Later hops are not affected.

Dont overlook that cold weather keeps people inside using their connections.

Cold weather allows RF to flow more smoothly and in most cases (considering the plant/actives are setup with the proper thermals, AGC's) will actually increase the signal to your home, which doesnt mean anything speed wise, but does mean more (unless over amp'ed) stable connection. Latency is really a tuff issue with coax, but more than likely its a problem PAST the coax, as in the head end.

depends on what you consider cold.

for me, anything near 0 degress F is getting close to cold for me. I would think that anything below 0 would force the Bits travelling through the cable to turn around and head to the nearest southern NODE.

They do do that sometimes. Also sometimes bits play possum and cause LAAAGGGG.

Glad I could give you a little perspective on this.

Pings are back to crap once again!!

I emailed my isp and this is what they replied:

--We have identified a problem with a circuit between us and the Chicago hub on the third hop out, a new circuit will be added on February 11th to correct the problem. any trace route you have documented would be helpful
Thank you--

I sent them two trace routes and hopefully they can use it for any good. Also, that worm virus that is causing havok for the past few weeks finally made it into our networks... speeds went down from 3mb to 200k last night. Did a speed test recently and back upto 2.5mb or so.
