Is this a decent card?

Post by Humboldt »

Thinking about getting this Crucial Radeon 8500LE.

I know little about video cards except that I can't afford a 9700 Pro, is this a good deal?

I'd be replacing an old Voodoo3 200:D

Thanks

Such as...?

I've seen other ones out there for cheaper but don't know enough about them to be able to compare their worth.

No, not set on ATI at all, just seems like a good deal.

$130 or so is about all I can spend right now. That's why the 8500LE seems like a decent buy to me, it has TV out (which I want so I can copy a few old VHS tapes to my computer) and anything will be a step up from my current card...and it's just a bit over $100.

I'd be glad to consider any other recommendations though.

A card with TV OUT won't help you dump vhs to your computer, you need VIVO or firewire .
but I still am happy with my Radeon 8500LE, not a game out i can't really play (yet) at decent resolution.

TV out is just , well, TV OUT :D

that allows you to display your desktop or whatever on a s-video equipped TV or such. VIVO (Video in/video out) is what allows the INPUT of video data in through a card. the radeon AIW would do that or any of the GeForce VIVO cards.

DOH! :D

I figured anything with a video out would also have a video in.

Stupid me, thanks for setting me straight.
So...anything that says VIVO?

OR the ATI AIW series, i dont think they say VIVO, but they do have inputs.
Theres various flavors, if you not gaming a 7000 or 7500 will be fine

yes! I think it's a great card!

I just bought two of these 64mb 8500LE for $72 a piece(w free shipping!),and I think for the $ they are pretty damn cool. ! :)
I put 'em in my kids pc's and they play UT and UT03 and all the QIII's better than the GF2 ever dreamed of!(which is what I had in their boxes)
and yes,I know they are manufactered by Saphire, but they are only $72 also,,,,,,,
I woke up this morning, had them Statesboro Blues.
I looked over in the corner, and Grandpa seemed to have them too.

Humboldt, i am curious. if you don't game, then why do you want a new vidcard? i know you said you wanted to be able to create video files from vhs tapes or whatever outside source. but, is there anything else you need?

the reason i ask is because you can save yourself some dough and just get a TV tuner/video capture card. something like this TV Leadtek Winfast "Deluxe" TV2000XP TV/FM multimedia card for $59.99. the benefit of this is that you will be able to upgrade the videocard separately from the video capture card in the future.

or, you could squeek both the 8500LE click_here mentioned and the TV tuner card for just a hair over your budget ($132 plus tax). you may even be able to get free shipping since they are both from newegg.

just something to consider.
