A CABLE Story

Post by LeXioN »

You have to check this out.

Everyone of You who has cable (Unlimited Bandwidth usage),
does lots of transfers probably, but You have to watch out, because I kind of trouble I got myself into is not fun.

Well, the story goes like this. Since my ISP offers great speeds
(for a cable) I used my connection pretty well. About few months
ago, I noticed that upstream speed was limited to about 150kbs. Next day I got @mail saying:

Code: Select all

Important Notice: Potential Security Breach

Dear Subscriber:

You may be running a server from you computer and not even know it.

If you use any of the peer-to-peer file services listed below
without disabling the file sharing option, the entire Internet can
access the files on your hard drive. In addition, use of these
services can lead to network problems that may result in your
upstream speed being temporarily reduced to control this abuse
of service.

Aimster, KaZaA, iMesh, Audiogalaxy, eDonkey2000, NeoModus,
BearShare, Gnotella, Gnucleus, GTK-Gnutella, LimeWire, Mactella,
Morpheus, Phex, Qtella, Shareaza, SwapNut, XoLoX

Don't compromise your privacy or the performance of your high-speed connection.

See http://security.uchicago.edu/peer-to-peer/no_fileshare.shtml for easy instructions on how to
disable file sharing for the peer-to-peer programs listed above.
You and other subscribers can then continue to enjoy Internet
services at peak performance speeds. And you'll steer clear of
iolating the restriction against running servers
For further protection and performance, we also recommend all
Internet users maintain firewall and antivirus software.

We want you to stay online and stay protected while
enjoying the best performance of high-speed Internet access.

Thank you

Sincerely,
Your *********Team
So, I waited about a month, until the temporary thing was as long as 1 month, so I decided to call in and...

This is what came out:

1. I had restriction because of CONSTANT transfers.
2. It violated their Terms of Use etc.

So, what to do for all You happy people who do lots of transfers:

If You do it CONSTANTLY meaning EVERYDAY, large chunks of files, your ISP will be suspicious and will get pissed off.

I used to think that my ISP didn't have restricitons on anything, but right now, I got it back up and don't want to loose such great
speeds.

When I say transfer I mean do it EVERYDAY. The guy said it's OK if you do it in 1 hour or 15hours as long as it's not CONSTANT
everyday the same for a certain period of time.

Well, just thought it might be interesting for some of You.

Later,

LeXioN

Don't ask about which ISP!!!
