Cable Tweak Guide?

Post by maximo »

This is my first post here so I'm new to all this. Ok so I downloaded the PPPoE patch last night and I have a couple of questions. First, should I have downloaded this one or the Generic one, how do I know it's working, and should I also download the Web patch, or is it all the same?

Welcome to SG maximo...

The PPPoE patch is for DSL connections utilizing PPPoE to authenticate users. Thus, if you are on a DSL connection that does NOT use PPPoE, or are on a cable connection, use the generic patch for your OS.

As for the web patch, you may use that as well.

Use sguide_default_xx.zip, then apply sguide_tweak_xx.zip, where xx = your OS.

Ok I'm going to try my best I probably messed this up to, sorry if I did but I'm tying so here goes. I downloaded Cablenut, but am I suppose to do something with it before all of this? My connection is Cable, my ISP is ATTbroadband and I don't know what the advertised speed is the link is http://www.attbroadband.com/. I did the 10 Speakeasy tests and 1781.6/270 was my average. I'm running XP for an OS. Here are the results of the TCP/IP Analyzer Test...

TCP options string = 020405b40103030201010402

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 256960
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 2 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 64240
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 10278.4 kbps (1284.8 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 4111.36 kbps (513.92 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 50 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

Also I've had Ad Aware and Spybot for a while and run them regularly. I hope all this is some what of what you are looking for to help you/me out. If I have done anything wrong just let me know to try it again. Thanks for the help.

OK great use the following settings:

DefaultReceiveWindow = 230400
DefaultSendWindow = 32768
DisableAddressSharing = 1
InitialLargeBufferCount = 100
InitialMediumBufferCount = 240
InitialSmallBufferCount = 320
LargeBufferSize = 81920
MaxFastTransmit = 64000
MediumBufferSize = 15040
PriorityBoost = 0
SmallBufferSize = 1280
TransmitWorker = 32
FastSendDatagramThreshold = 4096
EnableFastRouteLookup = 1
EnablePMTUDiscovery = 1
IgnorePushBitsOnReceive = 0
GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize = 64240
MaxFreeTcbs = 8000
MaxHashTableSize = 16384
MaxNormLookupMemory = 5000000
SackOpts = 1
SynAttackProtect = 1
Tcp1323Opts = 0
TcpLogLevel = 1
TcpMaxDupAcks = 2
TcpMaxHalfOpen = 100
TcpMaxHalfRetried = 80
TcpRecvSegmentSize = 1460
TcpSendSegmentSize = 1460
TcpTimedWaitDelay = 30
TcpUseRFC1122UrgentPointer = 0
TcpWindowSize = 64240
MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server = 20
MaxConnectionsPerServer = 10
DefaultTTL = 64
DisableUserTOSSetting = 0
TcpMaxDataRetransmissions = 6
DefaultTOSValue = 92

VERY IMPORTANT TO DO THE FOLLOWING

1. Under your LAN connection - properties - general tab, uninstall all the protocols there that you do not need.

2. Open IE and select tools - internet options - connections - LAN settings, make sure NOTHING there is checked.

3. Make sure you have the latest drivers for your NIC from the manufacturer. Set your NIC duplex mode to 10mb half duplex for Cable, for DSL it is ISP dependent unless you are using a router, if so then set it to 100mb full duplex for both Cable & DSL (the instructions are in my Help & Tips link). If you are using a router make sure you have the latest firmware.

4. Clear your temporary internet files.

5. Power cycle your modem, unplug it for atleast 15 seconds.

6. Download and update then do a scan with SpyBot, anything checked in red is spyware and safe to remove.

7. Make sure you do the faster web page tweak in my Help & Tips link.

:D ;) :cool:

mnosteele, he didn't ask for cablenut settings, he asked how to install the appropriate patch. Please do not put everyone in that one category... "Download Cablenut, import my settings".

I was refering to your original question and the fact it had nothing to do with Cablenut.

Ok mnosteele, I did everything you told me except for #1, #7, of VERY IMOPTANT TO DO THE FOLLING. For #1 I dont know what I should check or uncheck, maybe you could help me on this? For #7 I tried using HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic
es\Tcpip\ServiceProvider
But it would not work, is there something else I could try as I would really like this to work? Also after the changes I didn't notice a difference anywhere, what should I be looking for?

this is also my first time here. but i have a problem my cable modem is not connect to a eternet card as i dont have one it is connected to a usb port. so ley me know how i can get better speed out of this thing please.

Sorry I am also running windows XP for an OS

SpeedGuide.net TCP/IP Analyzer

Browser/OS = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; AIRF; Hotbar 4.2.4.0)

TCP options string = 020402180103030201010402

MTU = 576
MTU value seems to be optimized for dial-up. Consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput.

MSS = 536
Maximum useful data in each packet = 536, which equals MSS.
MSS is not fully optimized for broadband (although it might work well for slower connections). Consider increasing your MTU value.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 256960
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 2 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 64240
For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
523136 (MSS x 122 * scale factor of 8)
261568 (MSS x 122 * scale factor of 4)
130784 (MSS x 122 * scale factor of 2)
65392 (MSS x 122)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 10278.4 kbps (1284.8 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 4111.36 kbps (513.92 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 51 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

this is also my average speed from 10 tests.107/103
sucks huh please get back to me asap.

PS the only spyware i have is hotbar do i really need to get rid of it.Ie bar is so boring just plain????
