Setting up LAN 2 for computers?

Post by aks216 »

I have a 2 computers. 1 of them doesn't have an ethernet card but the other one does. i use cable modem through usb. is it still possible to connect both computers to the internet through a router? if so, how? if not, i'll go out and get an ethernet card.

you will need to setup one as a proxy server a cross over cable and a lan card in each computer. but the best way is to use a router

Are you using a USB only modem or just a USB network adapter?

If using a USB only modem, you'll have to use a router that supports USB modems. Otherwise any router should do.

my modem supports both usb and ethernet. it's a toshiba pcx1100U. i hooked up my cablemodem ethernet cord to the WAN on the router and i hooked up the other ethernet cord from the routher to my other computer which has ethernet, now technically, shouldn't this work? do i really NEED to hook up the ethernet from my router to both computers.

If you want to network both computers or be able to utilize the internet connection from the other computer, then yes, you'll have to attach it to a LAN port on the router.

If your setup is with usb >modem usb to computer( set up as a proxy server)from computer a cross over cable to second computer.
If you set up with a router (best way ) cable modem to router wan port all computer run off the router ports

From what you say I take it that you are set up>modem crossover cable to wan port on router then two computers to the ports on the router.Have you run the setup on the router?Did you unplug the cable modem for about a min or two ,so it can reset ?

I have the SpeedStream 2624 Wireless router. Haven't had a problem with it yet. It's been up and running ever since I got it, unlike the linksys I used to have before I took the hammer to it. lol Seriously!
