What is with SBC and LINKSYS

Post by techman »

I just got SBC/Yahoo from PacBell. They gave me a Speedstream 5360. SBC uses PPPOE. They also use Enternet 300. I have no problem connecting directly to the modem. The problem is when I try to use a Linsys 4 port switch (BEFSR41 ver.2). I can't get through the router to the modem. I have used their setup but to no avail. I went on the speedstream site looking for a firmware upgrade and what do you know,,,, they had posted in their knowledge base a statement that only a certain part no. would work with the linksys router and I don't have that version of modem. Has anyone had problems with SBC that way, and maybe another router would solve the problem.

I have the same Speedstream modem, and the same Linksys router :D

I'm using Earthlink DSL which is pppoe as well

I'm not the most advanced user here, but i think i may be able to help.

How have you configured your computer and your router?

If you haven't done anything yet, here are the steps... I think :)

1. The first thing i did was clear my settings for my network card's TCP/IP protocol. I'm not sure if you have to, but i did. For example, you probably need to "obtain IP automatically" in order to access the router for the first time.

2. also, your network card might be set to "automatic" for the link speed setting, which would work. But mine was set to 10Half mode, so i set it to 100Full mode. By the way, it's better to just set to 100Full as opposed to automatic.

3. then you have to access your router, by typing http://192.168.1.1 into your web browser. A user/password box should pop up, and all you have to type is "admin" for the password. Leave the user name blank.

4. Then you'll have to configure your router. For wan connection type, you'll select PPPoE. Because you are doing this, the router is handling the pppoe stuff, so you wont be needing to use enternet anymore. The User name and Password right under the Wan connection type is the user name and pass for your ISP. The password on the "Password" page is the password you'll be using to access your router. On the Status page you can press connect, which will connect you if you have entered the right settings.

5. There are other things you can do on your computer like entering in the DNS servers manually, and setting an ip address on the computer manually. This is what i have done.

There are other settings you can mess with, but i just went over the basics. I'm typing this quickly so I may be a little confusing. If you need me to clear something up, just ask and ill try to explain better; or someone else will probably help out.

I've done an incredible amount of SNET/SBC DSL setups (probably over 100 by now).....over 75% of them are with Efficient Networks Speedstream 5260, and lately, the 5360 modems...and Linksys routers. I've had no compatibility issues at all. A couple of others with the WestTell modems.

Linksys routers have had no compatibility issues since firmware 1.30 came out.

This year, over the past 3 months or so, have had a few disconnect problems across many clients....but prior to that, and over the past month, same equipment across the board...no problems.

You'll want your PPPoE software uninstalled when using the router.

It depends what part number

Post by techman »

It turns out that there is a known issue with the SpeedStream 5360 part number ending in 002. There is a firmware upgrade for part number ending in 023 but not for 002. On the SpeedStream site they acknowledge the problem. I went and setup using a Westell 516. I also realize that Enternet 300 was trying to run a pppoe client and so was the Linksys router.

I also didn't put any of SBC's overloaded software on my machine. When I used their software, I could not get the router to work, removed everything, and what do you know, it worked!
I not sure they are deliberately trying to make sure you can't hook up anything but one computer.

Hey, rclayton, how do I do that? Do I go to network neighborhood or Device manager? I am using win2k.

I have win98se, but i figure it would be the same for win2k.

its in control panel > network > then look for your network card then hit properties... its not the tcp/ip version of your network card, just the network card by itself.

I have:

1. SMC EZ Card...
2. TCP/IP -> SMC EZ Card...

you would look at #1.
