Question about MAC Addresses.

Post by Infinite_3D »

Me and my friend are arguing about Mac addresses.

OK, please correct me if i am wrong but isn't a MAC address unique to the network card you are using? If that is true, doesn't it mean that if you get a new network card, you get a new MAC address.

So what I am trying to say is:

New network card = new MAC address?

My friend says a MAC address is unique to the COMPUTER. He says that IF you change your network card, your MAC address will remain the same.

Who's right?

I believe MAC address is the identification number on modem, which is also what your ISP uses. This number is probably on a sticker underneath your modem, which means the network card doesnt have anything to do with MAC address. Please correct me if i'm wrong. :D

Change NIC's and your ISP see's a different MAC address. I know Comcast records the MAC address of your modem AND your NIC. When I switched NIC's in the same PC, I was charged for an EXTRA ACCOUNT  ! I had to jump through hoops to prove to them that I was only using ONE PC at that time!

Each network device, network card, modem, router, switch has a unique Media Access Control address.Change network cards and your MAC address for your PC changes. If your modem is swapped the new modem will have a different MAC address.
