Mine is absolutely fantastic.
But you know what the secret is? It's not really wether you have DSL or cable. I'll smack anyone in the head who's going to try to insist one is better than the other. You always get some knucklehead who's going to insist "Cable rulez, DSL sux", or "DSL rules, cable sucks".
WRONG!
It's all about a factor of several things.
Biggest impact....your ISP. Yes, believe it or not, some ISP's are better than others. All ISP's are not created equal. If I were to be using my local phone company for my DSL, I'd probably have answered to #3 in your poll. But I happen to get my DSL from a really high quality ISP, who I've been with for many years, they were fantastic back in the dial up days (I had dial up and used to ping in the 120 - 140 range every day, occasionally I'd be around a 100). Well, their DSL is just as fantastic. Yet my buddies around my neighborhood, using local phone company DSL....just as average as anything else. I'll blow his pings away any day.
DSL by design is a little more stable than cable.....but that's on the whole. It's really up to the ISP you use. Most of us have heard of OOL and wished we could get their service...(that's cable BTW)
Other factors which can vary from person to person, even if they use the same ISP...is the line quality up to and into your house. One person use an ISP can have a great experience if his lines are in great shape, yet another person living say two streets down using the same ISP can have crappy lines to his house, or inside his house, and have a miserable time.
Also with cable, it's shared on your node. For most people, that doesn't matter much, but in some areas, implemented by an ISP that oversells it's bandwidth, it can create nightmares for their customers. Again, you can see it's the ISP that controls that....a good one will not oversell it's bandwidth to nodes.

I couldnt agree with you more cat. For instance, I have sdsl here at work and it slows down a lot during the day but fast during the morning and evening hours and I have cable at home and its fast any time of the day. It really just depends on your ISP and not dsl / cable sucks BS. While others could be the opposite of me regarding there cable or dsl speeds. It's all about the ISP's.

helll yea, dsl rules,maybe
Well my dsl service is flawless, (earthlink)But maybe that has to do with the fact im 1 block away from the service.I pretty much get all my bandwith. 1.5 d 384 up, av. 1.4 d and 300 up.
my ping is av. about 40 to 80. on CS and Bf 1942. depend where I play though.
I live in a small hick town, and cable in not here yet, just got dsl 1 yr ago. I was the first one to get it,LOL, my father in law works for sprint. But yeah my dsl rocks, just look around and test some providers.

That's a bummer....PPPoE can take up some overhead of your bandwidth (like 5 - 7% or something), make sure you have the latest version of PPPoE software, or the latest firmware on your router, and play with the MTU on your router if you can.
I got lucky, my ISP uses PPPoA, which there is no software, no login, no MAC, no computer host name, just pure ATM...set your NIC or router to Obtain auto...DHCP ....and I'm off and running. I get really pissed if my ping goes much about 80, or 100. Usually in the 40 - 60 range, or under 30 if it's a game server co-lo'd at my ISP.
