Need help sharing cable connection.

Ok, first the details--

--2 computers wanting to share a cable internet connection (Comcast @Home).

--One computer is running WinXP Home, the other WinME

--2 seperate IP addresses

--Linksys Hub

The problems--

--When either computer is hooked up alone, it can get online.

--When both are connected to the hub, only one computer can get online (which ever one attempts to first).

--In order to get the other computer online, we must first power-cycle the modem, then renew the IP Address (through winipcfg/Repair) of that computer, and then start up IE. However, the other PC is then unable to get online, nor can it renew it's IP address (through winipcfg/Repair).

Does anyone have a solution? We've tried calling Comcast, but they couldn't help. They said that it's the hub, but we're able to network just fine.

Thanks a million in advance to any who can lend their assistance. Let me know if you need more information please.

The problem seems to be you are usuing just a hub instead of a router. When you say you are suing two different IP's are these given to you by COmcast meaning you are paying for two seperate IP's? If that is the case then Comcast should be more cooperative in helping you. I would still recommend going the one IP/router option, it's cheaper and the odds that you'll see a perfromance drop is minimal providing you are not usuing the bandwidth at the exact same time.

It definitely sounds like Comcast is not giving you 2 IP addresses.

Correct.
If that is the case then Comcast should be more cooperative in helping you.
Comcast cooperative? That's a paradox if I ever heard one. ;)

But seriously. I've called them a few times already. They couldn't do anything to help at all. Not even Level 3 tech could pinpoint the problem.

I understand, but we don't plan on keeping this cable connection very long. Just enough to get us through this winter season. Thus being the case, keeping what we have and paying for a second IP seemed like the best option.

And yes--we ARE getting 2 IPs. I've check everything out already. The problem seems to be the Hub that we're using (although it worked fine in the past). We'll find out soon enough, though, because a friend is bringing his Router over to test.
