Problem again with NVidia GeForce4

Post by CSn00bi3 »

I just reinstalled windows. When I inserted the Nvidia GeForce4 into the PCI slot and started up the system, it gave an error message on startup saying:

Resource Conflict - PCI Network Controller on Motherboard
Bus:01 Device:05 Function:00

If you are wondering I didn't install the drivers yet.

Please help, this is really pissing me off. I can't play Counter-Stike running on 8fps with motherboard video graphics. I also don't feel like going to CompUSA, pay 90 dollars, and wait a week to get this fixed.

System Specs:
HP Pavillion 2950
384mb SDRAM
Windows XP PRO
Pentium III 1.0ghz

did you disable the onboard video in the BIOS ? maybe try moving your network card to a different slot.

You have a "PCI GF4"? If so, Why? I didn't know that it was available.
Then again you probly meant that you installed the GF4 into the "AGP slot" right?

Do you have any other "card'z" installed, i.e. add-on sound card, ethernet card, and so on? If so, since you are re-installing Windows w/no add-on card driver's installed yet. Try removing all add-on card's from PC (except video card) then install your video card drivers first once your windows installation is complete. Then install add-on cards one at a time starting with soundcard being positioned as far away from video card as possible. Oh and another thing, PCI slot one and the AGP slot usually like to share same IRQ, I personally don't install anything in PCI slot one anyway (won't be able to once my Ti4200 shows up sometime this week).

I don't want to disable my onboard video becasue that is my only option to see my screen. My GeForce4 doesn't run at all. If I disable my onboard video I won't be able to see my screen.

Yes PCI GeForce4 are available.
My Computer is so small that it doesn't have an AGP slot available.

My motherboard has a single PCI slot in which another PCI card is lodged. That PCI card has another 3 PCI slots in which it holds my 1394net-driver and that is also where I put my GeForce4.
Its kinda hard to explain my motherboard and stuff, because it ain't like other PCs.

Well then, my guess is that pci gf4 card is toast or the contraption of a pc you have can't handle it.

Maybe not necessarily, try removing the 1394 net card for now and the add-on 3 slot PCI card and just install the Vid card into the one slot on the mobo and see if it works that way (disable the on-board vid card too btw). If the GF4 works then that's your prob - you're running into address/IRQ probs or like LT-73 mentioned, mobo cannot handle such an upgrade - incompatibility, sorry :( .

That's not an add-on PCI card that his other PCI cards are plugged into...that's called a "Riser Board"....pretty much an extension of the motherboard to allow PCI slots which the ultra small form factor motherboard uses. Riser boards are quite common on entry level OEM's, and very popular on servers.

You can try disabling other devices, such as a COM 1 or COM2 port, or even your LPT printer port...to free up resources...so that PnP will adjust other devices, such as your NIC....which may free up room for the GF4.

I do want to warn you though, upgrades on entry level OEM machines don't always go well....the power supplies are humble on them, often just a 135 watter or 180 watter....and GF vid cards are thirsty....and require a lot of juice to be pumped through the mobo....these machines tend to lock up a lot trying to run these cards, if you get them working with it.

I did what all of you said, disable on-board video, disable printer port, disable com1, etc.
It still doesn't work.
It was working before until I updated the drivers (btw which I removed and deleted everything that the nvidia detonators installed).

I installed the new geforce 4 drivers and my system went burzirk.. mouse cursor was a white box.. the icons on the desktop are white.. no color to them.. in uninstalled the drivers and installed the latest final release... not the beta.. it still didn't correct everything but at least I can see my mouse cursor but I'll have to see what happens in a few weeks, before I get peeisst off and go back to using Radeon.
I want my icons back.. I have a speaker a diskdetector a double screen a photo downloading program winrar a phone, and thats all that has come back.. so far.. I want my computer icon back and my network places icon back.. all the others I don't really care about..

okay you gotta get into your bios and make -Init Display {AGP}
but you must have your monitor plugged into a pci card or onboard first..
then boot computer hit "del"
look for Integrated Peripherals Settings and change your init Display to {AGP} hit "f10" then "enter"
then shutdown computer or just unplug it..
then plug monitor into agp card.. plug computer back in and power up computer.. should give you a post.. or atleast something..
Good luck.
