Networking 2 pc's Major Problem !

Post by LT-73 »

ok,i'm trying to network 2 pc's and for some reason it won't happen and it's really tickin me off!!

I've done this many times b4 and this time it does'nt wanna werk.

I have 1cable modem,and 3 nic cards.

2 nic cards in one pc and

1 nic in the other pc.

I want to connect 2 pc's to the internet and be able to see #2 pc on my one monitor. All 3 nic cards are new

2 netgear FA310TX
1- 3com

I swapped them around and there's no conflicts, but when i try to hook up pc#1 to pc#2, it keeps tellin me, the network cable is unplugged. I swapped 7 different cables and still says the same thing, WTF is it saying this??? 6 of the cables are brand new and just to be sure thay are not damaged, i unplgged them from one pc and just hooked up #1 pc directly to the cable modem.

All 7 cables work perfectly yet when i try to hook them fro pc#1 to pc#2, this dam thing keeps repeating the network cable is unplugged !! GRRRRRRRRRR

I've been at this already for 3 hours and i can't get online thru rig #2.

Somebody help !!! I'm losing my dam mind !

Are you sure you are using a crossover cable from PC#1 to PC#2?

Like i mentioned, i've done this a hundred times b4, yes i'm using a crossover cable. Unless i'm using the wrong crossover cable, what else could be wrong?

You've ruled out the cards by swapping between machines. It must be the cable.

Um, 6 new cables all go bad? I don't think so.

Turn off auto-sense for the media type for both cards. They may be trying to negotiate a speed and are failing. Although im pretty sure you would still get a link if it was physically connected.

Just a thought.

"Network cable unplugged" is actually indictating pc#1 having difficulty negotiating between the 2 CARDS. Double check the setting on each.
S/B straight cable> card to modem, crossover cable> card 2 to pc2.
PC1 with ICS running. Same user account on both machines, and both belong to same workgroup.
