Networking Problems

Post by chilt »

I have 4 computers , three XP and one 98. How would i set things up so I can have cable modem to all computers for internet access?

When cable is pluged into router directly the internet access fails every morning. I have to plug the cable into one computer first and reboot and THEN plug the cable into the router to distribute the internet. It seems the cable does not read the router. Is this a common problem ? If so how can I avoid it ? If not , what is the proper configuration in this instance?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

If you keep having to reset the router every morning, give your ISP a call. Your modem may be dropping offline, which will (sometimes) make you have to reset the router.
When a problem comes along...You must whip it.....When something's going wrong...You must whip it....Whip it good...

What does your ISP use for authentication? I'm betting MAC id...in which case the router you got hopefully supports MAC spoofing.

Or is it DNS host name to log in?

I have no clue. Would sharing the internet access work if I installed another NIC to the computer and plugged the internet into that and ran another line from that pc to the router to all the other PCs?

in WinXP to find your MAC address.
1. Go to Run in your start menu
2. Type "cmd"
A command prompt should come up.
3. Type "ipconfig /all"
4. Look for Physical Address, that it! Write that down

Go to your Linksys router config page...... and someone else can take it from here. hehe
