Linksys BEFSR11 Router Disconnects

Post by fustiar »

I got my linksys BEFSR11 1-port router around 5 months ago. It worked fine, without a hitch.

Recently I've taken to downloading a lot off of newsgroups and my connection will die randomly. I know its the router and not the connection because I am not able to access it when it does this [192.168.1.1], and once i reset the router my connection goes live again. If I am not downloading off of newsgroups, it will work fine without any disconnections.

I've updated the firmware from Sept. 2000 to the latest from Linksys which is April 02/2002, but the problem remains.

My network setup is like this:

Cable modem -> router -> switch uplink -> computers

I'm running Windows XP, using Xnews for newsgroups.

I have a feeling that the excessive speed [200+k/s] is perhaps overflowing the memory buffer of the router, or maybe its just too fast for the router to handle?

Or is my router just ****ty? Should I get a new one? I got this router used and i don't have anything except the router and the adapter.

Any help would be appreciated

I have the same router and had freezes/disconnects but the latest firmware solved those issues. Since the firmware upgrade, it had not frozen once or disconnected. Unless I tell it to hang up, my connections stays alive. I run a mail server, ftp server, 2 web servers and have a mix of win98 and win2k machines. I do not have XP (win2k is better anyway). Perhaps you have a hardware problem. Try another router. You mentioned excessive speed... are you talking about downloading content? I routinely send files in excess of 30MB inbound and outbound without problems.

yes, downloading content mainly. now the problem does not even need excessive speed to disconnect.

i think i may try a different router and see.

On the routers firmware, have you enabled MTU and set it to max, something like 1492 or 1472?

While the Linksys is far from the fastest router out there, I've installed and setup probably over a hundred of them by now, for modest needs, it's my fave entry level router.
