Important Question !

Post by Cyb3rdemonX »

Hello.
There is something which is kinda confusing me in Online Games ... such as CounterStrike .

Is there a lag difference (lag spike, delay, etc.) between a Cable Modem which is getting 180 ping (latency) on a server & a Dsl Modem which is getting 180 ping (latency) on the same server.

I really need to understand this & if possible need some details ...
Thanks in advance !

Welcome to Speedguide :D , I'm not 100% sure what you asking, but latency is latency, if they both have a latency of 180 then they should have the same amount of lag. :)

Well, actually when your throw a game into the mix, things are not so straightforward especially when you talk about generic lag.

A ping is a ping...but ping response time (latency of your network), and overall latency (factor in packet loss and intrasystem latency due to hardware) are two entirely different beasts.

Yes, there are MANY times when I've seen a player with, say, a 60ms ping time have much higher in-game latency than another player with a 150ms ping.

Huh? I don't follow that concept. "PING" is the round trip time information takes from 2 points on the network. I don't see how a ping of 180ms could be different than an ping of 180ms.
