Your ISP will have a bunch of proxy servers on their network, cahcing various sites that are regularly used by the its clients i.e. you.
It is unpracticle to assume that you have a direct connection anyway, for example I'll stake money on the fact that if you go to [url]
http://www.yahoo.co.uk,[/url] you will be going to a cached copy of the web site on another server at some point.
Proxy servers can be set up in a number of ways, they can cache pre determined sites, or they can just keep a cache of a web site for a period of time.
E.g. user A goes to
http://www.yahoo.co.uk at 9am. at 9.15, user b goes to the same site, but instead of being routed directly to that site, he will most likely be routed to a cached copy. This saves the ISP having to connect again to the same server to retireve the same information.
If you go via your ISP to a proxy server, then the authentication is done invisibly to you.
If your situation changes, you will notice no difference.
