my pings suck

Post by LOCK|DOWN »

ok, i play ALOT of counterstrike and my ping freaking sucks, i mean CS, Quake, MOHAA, ect my pings are all the same, 100-150.

i think the problem is that im in Northwestren Ontario (Thunder Bay) and my requests have to be routed all the way to Calgary before i even got out of the Shaw Cable network.

My download and upload speeds are great, but my pings are awful, can anyone please help me?? hopefully thier are some other Ontario Shaw subscribers who are having the same troubles.

PS WinXP pro, and i'm sharing my connection through a Netgear RP114 (latest firmware). i tired not using my router and it didn't help at all, same thing.

TCP options string = 020405b40103030201010402

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 256960
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 2 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 64240
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 10278.4 kbps (1284.8 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 4111.36 kbps (513.92 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 55 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

Try decreasing your rwin to 56000, that 256000 seems a bit too high...check out dslreports.com for tweak tests. Not sure if it will help you with your pings.

I have adsl myself. And i had a ping just like you. When i played counter-strike i had a ping that changed every second. From 100 to 200 and 300. But i've just bought a adsl-router and al the problems are gone. I recommend you to buy a router and you always have a good ping.

He has one... and a pretty decent one, the Netgear 114.

Lockdown....you're realized what your problems are.....your routing. Download and upload speeds have very little to do with pings...it's all about routing....how many hops you have to your favorite servers....all found out through tracert. The least amount of hops, the better. For even decent online gaming, you want your hops to be well below 20....ideally closer to a dozen or less.

How to do this? Some people are lucky and have several ISP's to choose from, others are limited. Often with DSL, you can chose from several ISP's... :) whereas with cable, you're often limited :(

I was lucky, instead of using the local phone company for my DSL, which is just a "so so" ISP, I was able to use the ISP I had been using for many years with dial up. Years ago, when I was hooked on online gaming in the early Quake 1 days, I learned and researched about the differences in ISP's, and shopped around, trying out this ISP, and that ISP, until I found a really good one. Dial up pings in the 140's....not bad, sometimes even 120...and under a 100 if playing on a server co-lo'd at my ISP. Luckily for me, they offered DSL, and I ping well below my buddies who use the local phone co for their DSL.

Little things you can do that may help your game, latest drivers on a quality NIC, good router (you already have), good network cables not placed near anything that would give EMI (same with router and modem). Also lower your FPS in your game...the higher the FPS, the more demand on your connection for an update per frame from the server. Play with the rates in your game also...lower them for a slower connection.
