Connection Vs. Computer

Post by Game_Junky »

Alright i have a nice POS 566 celeron 256 ram onboard 16 bit vid chip win 98 - I have a us robotics 56k+ modem and i ping roughly 120-140 ok...

My bro has a AMD 1800xp (only running about 1.6 gig) hes got 256 ram - has 2 hard drives 40 gig 7500 rpm(scuzzy drive) and a gforce 4 vid card right - Well hes got a standard modem and pings roughly 170.

If i upgraded my computer to something similiar to his, with my modem would my ping be even better?

And why would mine ping better (both have 56k modems, connect the same speed) and hes got sucha better comp?

Need some responses thx

could be many things

ISP yur phone lines how far u live from ther call in area

Are they the even same brand and type modems?

thinks would only get better if you upgraded to a faster CPU

A ping juges the time it takes for your pc to send to the host and the host reply or is it the other way but you get my point

Id upgrade 4 sure and look in to some broadband lol

No **** im tryin to get broadband lol

I was just curious what factors are doign what

The two different comps are in my house - same phonelines

my modem is slightly better but his comp blows me out of the water, was just curious why lol

I knew a upgrade for my comp would obviously help the ping

Difference in quality of the modems....

and, believe it or not, quality of the computer, as far as the video card is concerned...can impact your ping. On some games, the faster your FPS, the more demand you as a client will put to the server that you're playing on. Your games software, depending on your games rate setting, will demand an update from the server per frame per second....so a very fast computer with a honkin GF4 vid card, that pushes very high frames per second, will flood it's connection for updates from the server.....which affects your ping.

Although in some games the server limits how many updates and how much information per update is sent every second, so even if you were on the fastest pipe and computer in the world it would only send x amount of info at any given time.
