weird bsod
Yeah.. I got a bsod and it was screwed up because it was telling me that the system halted and something about memory.. I didn't write it down sorry.. and When I pressed the power button to try and reset my PC... it didn't work I had unplug and replug..

The power supply unit (PSU) is the box that has the cord that you plug into the wall electrical outlet. By having to unplug & replug it to power down the puter, it may be bad or going bad, or not adjusting power correctly.Originally posted by Rara
This is the first time this has ever happened.. and I have 384 RAM and the event log doesn't show anything it's like it doesn't do a memory dump. It's a gateway computer I upgraded from Windows 98 SE.. and I don't know what you mean by power supply.
You should be able to hold the puter's power button in for ~8-10 seconds and the puter should cut off...
All of this could be the result of overheating in your puter... Be it the power supply, the RAM, what ever...
I would guess it would be either PSU, RAM, heating problem, or a mixture...
Another thought and question. You say that you upgraded from 98. Was this upgrade recent? Computers that are bought ready to run are usually problematic when you try to change OS's or upgrade them. The Manufacturer usually loads them up with their drivers and such often causing problems when you try to use others....

I would check those things first. I assume you're not overclocking your pc.Originally posted by Ken

You could try taking the side off your case and see if that helps with the heat, if not I would check the psu.
Crackin' skulls and breaking kneecaps.
The XP OS update seems like it was done long enough ago and with out problems.
Do you monitor the temperatures inside of your box? If so what are they?
You haven't added any hardware, changed RAM or anything recently, correct?
PSU and heat can cause many problems...
You didn't tell me about your PSU. It came with your Gateway, correct?
Have you added any fans, lights or anything that uses electricity since you got the puter?
Have you changed any BIOS settings or done any tweaking or over clocking?

Yes, Grimmy, i agree...
IMHO, it would seem to be either heat, psu, RAM or a combo...
Hey Rara,
Sometimes a problem can be a little more advanced than a user can repair themselves...
I don't believe that you would be comfortable switching RAM around, testing your PSU and such... This can be dangerous and expensive if a person does something wrong and fries or breaks something else...
As I truly believe this to be a hardware problem, I would have to recommend that you take it to a puter repair shop and get an estimate or see what they say...
If you feel confident on your knowledge and abilities with puters, let us know, but I really don't think that it is a good idea...

Well unless you disabled the dump file writing it should be on your system. I'm not sure on XP cause I've never had a bsod but I've had plenty on 2k. Look in the windows dir in a folder called minidump. There is a command line proggie that will let you look at the dmp file called dumpchk on your xp cd in the support\tools\support.cab dir. Note the file compressed.
