Strange major Shaw@Home slowdown, after only 1 day!!!

Post by vulcan4d »

I had Telus 1.5Mbit ADSL and was getting ~170kb/s but I decided to try out Shaw@Home cable. I took the 2 month preview, definitely enough time to compare.

After the install guy came I tried both Shaw and Telus speedtests on my Shaw@Home cable connection. I was amazed to get close to 500kb/s. The whole day I got that speed, I tested it every 30min because I couldn't believe it ;) . Newsgroups were flying, movies from IGN were streaming at 300kb/s...I was in heaven :) . So I thought, this ADSL is crap...I'll call Telus in a week and tell them beep off :D .
I also hooked up my sister's PC and got the same results, very nice.

The next day I turn on my computer but something wasn't right. The webpages weren't flying as fast. I checked both speedtests and got a horrible <100kb/s on both PC's :cry: . Sometimes it was above 100 but mostly below. I thought, maybe their having some problems I'll just wait.

Today is the third day I'm using Shaw@Home, and the slowdown continues. This is much worse than my ADSL right now, have no idea what's going on. I didn't do any changes on my end.

Anyone have any idea why this is happening? It started out so damn nice. If tomorrow I'll get the same thing, I'm calling tech support because this is damn odd.

Welcome to SG. The head DSL guy will be along in a bit. He has lots of women to attend to.

Have you tried the SG analyzer? Maybe your setup is off a bit and a tweak or two will help. Take the test, copy and paste your results (edit out the IP number) and lets see what is going on.

Sometimes the provider will give you a burst at the start and then slowly crank it down to normal... which might be what you have going on now.

OK I took the test, here are my results:

-------------------------------------------------------
TCP properties for IP = XX.XX.XX.XXX ()
Note: Read the FAQ if the above is not your IP address.
Browser/OS = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.01; Windows NT 5.0)

TCP options string = 020405b40103030201010402

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which is equal to MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 256960
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 2 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 64240
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 10278.4 kbps (1284.8 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 4111.36 kbps (513.92 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 52 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000
---------------------------------------------

Note: I did turn off proxy to get my actual IP.

Shaw is doing some changes, for instance you will notice that @home.com e-mail addresses are no longer available, you must choose one of the other options. They are making some changes, moving away from Excite (wories of their fiscal situation) etc. They SAY that it will get better after the changes are made. try some tweaks, maybe they will help. good luck

the same thing happened to me, I suggest calling up Shaw and talking to a technican and get them to come over and check out your connection and check out your modem and see if anything went wrong with those, and if not get them to check your cap(upload/download) maybe someone has put it to low accidently. After you try both of those and have no success try tweaking, I use

For Windows 98

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\MSTCP

DefaultRcvWindow=372300 ( I have have success with this but some people argue it is to high, its up to you)
*String Value*

DefaultTTL: 64 or 128
*String Value*

PMTUDiscovery=0
*DWORD*

Tcp1323Opts=3
*String Value*

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\MSTCP\Parameters

SackOpts=1
*String Value*

MaxDupAcks=3
*DWORD*

IF THAT DOESNT WORK DELETE ALL OF THE FOLLOWING FROM YOUR REGISTRY AND DOWNLOAD THE @HOME SPEED PATCH FROM

its probably your tranmission frequency its probably to high or to low, get it check out by a shaw technican, cuz I had the same problem and I got it checked out and now my modem goes as fast as it did the day i got it 300k+, for you it might be faster cuz there might be less people on shaw in your area.
