Unable to ping customer

Post by whitt »

This is strange. A customer calls me saying she cannot use some particular applications while online. She mentioned both Kazaa and Morphius. Internet explorer and email works fine.

I tried pinging her first of all. I kept getting request timed out. I had her uncheck EVERYTHING in msconfig/startup and was still unable to ping her. She said this started happening since her cable internet provider changed. Which was 7 months ago. I find that hard to believe but I dont know. She had at some point Zone Alarm but uninstalled it. It was not in the startup menu. She has 98 or ME, I cant remember which. She can ping her modem and so could I. She has a network card. I removed tcp/ip and put it back.

No she does not have a router. I know this because of her IP address. If anyone can give me any help with this I would be most thankful. I will be giving her a call back. I did tell her to upgrade to IE 6 and also to reinstall Zone Alarm and then uninstall it again. Just in case she removed it incorrectly. Also in Internet Options she did not have the privacy tab. That seemed odd. Is that only with IE 6. Thanks again everyone.

The problem is Zone Alarm and fairly common, it leaves ALOT registry entries behind after it is uninstalled that must be removed manually. Look here and choose the appropriate OS/ZA combination. :) ;)

Thanks for the link. I will pursue this as a Zone Alarm issue. This was my suspected problem.

You'll have to remove the .VXD in Safe Mode at the very end, which is always a treat...... :rotfl:

Great job C. M. Weaver :D . I personally had no problems with ZA when I used it but it is a pain in the ass to remove. :) ;)

The new ISP may also have port 139 blocked at their NOC router.

If thats the case, you cant ping it.
