major networking snafu

Post by Kno One »

ok not sure how to explain this but ill give it a shot

im running XP on a 800 mhz ath with 128 megs ram and im using a sohoware eitherfast 10/100 nic

i was trying to network my pc and a laptop together using a belkin direct connect usb hub, and as far as i can tell, i some how lost the file(s) that XP uses to load the drivers and protocals for its networking functions. so now my nic wont work and under device manager it says "windows couldnt load the driver for the device (error code 31)" and when i have tried to reload or update the drivers i get an error message that says "this device couldnt be installed because windows couldnt find the requested file" i also get that message when trying to install anyother network adapter.

well i hope that enought info ill be checking back fequently so please help if you can thanx

Dude,

If you are running XP, then the quickest and easiest way to revert problems is to use (cross-fingers, salt over shoulder), System Restore.

If you have it enabled, as most do on a default installation, go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories --> System Tools --> System Restore.

See if there is a snapshot that was taken just before the problem started happening. (or close enough)

Restore your computer to the earlier config, and you should be fine.

If this does not work, or you do not have a snapshop that is within 2weeks of the problem occurance, then try this...

1. Boot up in safe mode or safe mode with networking (press F8 at the dashed bars at the beginning of XP boot)

2. go into device manager and delete or uninstall the ethernet card

3. reboot normally and install your updated or original drivers

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Glove
