Connection to the internet drops

Post by bertwikk »

I've been encountering this problem on and off for a few weeks.
I've gotten no where with Rogers cable (they say everything on
their end is fine). It came to a head this weekend when I was on
a service call (I work for a software firm) and I discovered that while logged onto our web based bug tracking system, I found
out my network connection had dropped off.

When I first was connected to my cable modem (about 2
months now), the connectivity was fine. One day, approximately
2 weeks ago, I noticed that I couldn't connect to a site using IE. I
rebooted and I could connect fine. The next day, the same thing
happened. I noticed that other applications that I had that
accessed the internet wouldn't work either. I use Windows Media
Player, Real Player, putty and Norton Utilities mostly, and they wouldn't connect either, except for Putty, a telnet type app, but
they would connect after a reboot. If I kept them open, their
connection would eventually "hang up". If I'm using IE, after
about 15 to 20 minutes I would start getting these "site not
available" errors that go away again after a reboot. I have not
installed any new software during this time. I did install another
network card, but the behaviour is the same.

The realy wierd thing is that when I'm getting the "site not available" error in IE or "unable to connect" in Media Player, the connection via Putty was fine and kept on working. It didn't matter if I was constantly using IE, the connection would hang up regardless of usage. If anyone has any hints or tips that I could look into, I would really appreciate it. :(

Sounds like a classic signal drop. I'd call Rogers and have them come check the lines. Log each time it goes out and comes back up, if it ever does without a reboot.

Kip may have something to add to this.

GAH! I'm having this same problem, only with At&t. I have no idea what the problem is!
BTW, I have both 98 and 2000 (dual boot), and it happens in both. Tech support is clueless. HELP

I had this problem once also, the signal was apparently strong enough and I can't remember what the actual issue was (I think the signal frequencies were fluctuating too much or something) , but they put an attenuator on the cable input of my modem. That seemed to solve the connection drops. Someone here can probably tell you what it will do exactly. Cheap little part that might be worth a try...
