APC+120amp hours battery=insane uptime?
APC+120amp hours battery=insane uptime?
Hi all, i have a 120 Amp Hour/850MCA deep cycle marine battery lying around, and i was thinking to myself "isn't there a way to hook this thing up to my APC for some insane uptime in a power outtage?" My question is, can i do this? The battery is brand new, but i don't know if it is going to overload my apc or if there are any other problems with doing this? Thanks in advance!

Some UPS have two batteries in them, in series, which equals 24 volts. If yours has two batteries, then no, you can't do it.
If you only have one battery, then yes you can do it.
Here's the potential problems,
The UPS may be able to keep a good battery charged, but it might overheat the charging system trying to charge a low or dead battery other then what it is rated for, such as would happen after an extended power outage.
Also, almost all UPS's have sealed batteries which emit very little gas. When you charge a standard battery it emits an explosive and corrosive gas simular to hydrogen (remember the Hindenburg?)
If you don't blow yourself up lighting a cigarette, then the corrosion will eat up any organic material within about a six foot area. Such as cotton, steel, ect.
Other then that you should be OK.

Thank you for the reply's everyone! RoundEye, thanks for the info on the gases, i knew about them but not exactly what they where capable of doing..so, basically, my ups only has one battery so that means this should work, also i dont want the ups charging it! What i want to do is just plug it into the ups, fully charged, and after a power outtage i would just detatch it from the ups and carry it outside to charge it with the correct charger... would this work? Also about those gases..would it be better to put the battery in something like an air tight container so that the gases from the battery cant leak out into the room? thanks again!
