Linksys BEFW11S4 troubles

Post by Joebeme2 »

Hello,

I just got a new gateway laptop as a gift. The people that bought me this laptop also bought me a linksys befw11s4 wireless router so i can go online almost anywhere in the house. The gateway came with an integrated orinoco mini pci card and i am having a lot of trouble getting it to work with the router. The orinoco card finds the network and connects to it but, the router doesn't give me an ip address. When i try to renew the ip it says it can't contact a dhcp server. Dhcp is enabled on the router and all my pc's that are connected with an rj 45 to it work just fine. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I was able to fix my wireless problem... i had something unchecked. I think something may be wrong with the router though. I have 3 laptops and 3 desktops in my home. Two desktops are connected directly to the router and there is an uplinked hub in which another desktop connects to in another part of the house. Two of my laptops have WPC11 wireless adapters in them. If I have all of my computers are on, the computers will obtain an ip from the router but, then cannot go on the internet. At the same time, some can go on the internet. The computers that cannot go on the internet, also cannot access the configuration page (192.168.1.1). I tried hard resetting the modem and tried setting up my computers statically and I still cannot solve this problem. It is totally random as to when or which computer will go online or not. The manual says the router can handle up to 253 users… can they all be online at the same time? Thanks in advance for your help.

Make sure your router and your laptop are on the same channel and have the same SSID.

They are both on the same channel and have the same ssid. I don't even think it is a wireless problem anymore now. I think it is just a general problem with my router. When i turn on a pc (All XP), it will be able to obtain all the dhcp information from the router but, then if i try to access the configuration page or ping the router it times out. It is totally random as to when this happens. I have 2 desktops hooked up to the router right now... those two work fine but now my wireless doesn't work. If i shut down both desktops then the wireless will work. It's almost as if they can't all be used at the same time. Under the dhcp settings tab, it has 50 users so i don't think that is the problem. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

if you haven't already, disable any and all firewalls, especially the built-in XP firewall.

still sounds like some strange dhcp behavior..

That's awfully odd... whenever that happened to me... i just did a reset on the router because it was starting to tick me off. I only have 4 computers go on at the same time... two wired... and two wireless... no problems with the internet though. Hmmm maybe you're right and it is a problem with the router. Sorry i'm no help but maybe you can try a different router just to see if that is the problem? :(

Thanks for your reply. There are no firewalls on any of the computers. I reset it again and it started working. Thank you for your help.
