Highly unstable Cable

Post by Apple McNutFace »

1.3 P4
256 RDRAM
XP Pro

I just got Cox.net yesterday, and the connection was really bad. Today its a little better but its really unstable. My pings flux around 100-150 ms, and my DL speeds are start out decent but then they take a huge hit. Anybody got any ideas how to fix this?

TCP options string = 020405b40103030201010402

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 256960
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 2 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 64240
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 10278.4 kbps (1284.8 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 4111.36 kbps (513.92 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 52 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

Welcome to Speedguide.

What RWIN values have you tried? If you don't know how to edit your RWIN value, download the SG Optimizer.

Try the following values with Tcp1323Opts and Windows Scaling both set to 0 or off:49640 and 64240, remember to reboot after applying each setting. Let us know how these values affect your speed and/or ping.

Well using the RWIN values you suggested, my pings are much more stable although they are still a little high. My DL speeds are slighty lower but they don't seem to drop as much as before.

What are your current speeds? Take the following speed test and choose a location that is closest to you then post your results here.

Where are you from and what tweaks have you tried?

I'm from Louisiana, and so far the only tweak I've used is the SG TCP optimizer, I set it on optimize, and I've also used the Rwin values 49640 and 64240 w/ Tcp1323Opts and Windows Scaling off.

That's much better than before. Your DL speed will never be exactly the same 2 minutes later.. it can always decrease or increase. If your transfer rates are more stable then this is good.. You can try other RWIN values.. 46720, 56940

When I tried the RWIN settings you originally gave me my cable seemed to be getting better, but the next day was the complete opposite. Those RWIN values you just gave me didn't seem to help my cables stability much.

When I ping the forums here the pings are all over the place.

Pinging [63.217.30.71] with 64 bytes ->bytes=64 time=174ms TTL=243
Pinging [63.217.30.71] with 64 bytes ->bytes=64 time=203ms TTL=243
Pinging [63.217.30.71] with 64 bytes ->bytes=64 time=63ms TTL=243
Pinging [63.217.30.71] with 64 bytes ->bytes=64 time=59ms TTL=243
Pinging [63.217.30.71] with 64 bytes ->bytes=64 time=148ms TTL=243
Ping statistics for above hosts:
Packets: Sent = 5, Received = 5, Lost = 0 (0% loss)
Approximate round trip times (RTT) in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 59ms, Maximum = 203ms, Average = 129ms

I've came to the conclusion that Cox.Net just sucks =[

Are there any other ISP's in your area? Have you tried DSL? Make sure you get a package with speeds capable of 1.5mbps

your speeds are not bad :)

There are many factors that affect latency. Try doing Trace Routes to determine where the high latency is occuring. It is most likely a server outside the Cox network.

For the money Cox HSI is one of the best values around with speeds up to 3000 down and 300 up for $35 a month without modem rental. Most cable providers including ATTBI and Comcast are half that (1500/128) at around $50 a month. ComCast does offer a Pro package with speeds up to 3500 down and 386 up but it's $95 a month.

I had DSL for 3 years, but I moved and COX is the only provider available at the moment.
