WinMe Problem
WinMe Problem
There is a C:\_RESTORE folder in the c drive. This, I take, is suppose to help backup certain files. The problem I have is the folder is 2.5gig (yes, 2500meg) big and I am 100% certain that those 2.5gig are junk. No matter what I do I get a "Access is denied." It is a hidden folder and when I look at the properties of the folder it tells me "5 folders, 4000+ files" but when you open it you see only 4 files. I want to get ride of thse 2.5gig of junk. As well, everytime I start the computer there's this sys32 folder in the C:\windows\temp and when I open it. It's full of stuff that's not important. ie: game files.
I tried system restore, I failed a few times. Majority of the time it said it could not restore. I am currently running another system restore and it's taking a little bit longer then I thought and I hope it works...
Can someone help me? Tell me how I can delete these 2.5gig without formatting or stuff?

turn off system restore and you can delete the entire folder
or set it so it can only use a certian ammount of space
or just dont use windows ME, since ME SUCKS THE BIG ONE

To disable system restore
Right click "My Computer" icon on desktop, select 'properties'. Go to 'performance' tab click 'File System' button then 'troubleshooting' tab and uncheck "Enable system restore'
To delete the Restore Folder, right click it, uncheck 'readonly', hidden, and system boxes.
Right click it again, and select 'delete'

In the troubleshooting tab it's a bunch of "Disable" instead of Enable. So, I checked the "Disable System Restore." Restarted. I still cannot delete the _RESTORE folder (it still says Access is Denied) but instead of the 2.5gig it's now a meer (sp?) 2meg... that's a freakin huge difference...
One question about the c:\windows\temp folder everytime I restart the comp, there's a sys32 folder that's technically junk (a size of 100meg or so or more). How do I stop that?

Sorry bout the disable/enable mixup, I don't have, and never have had ME on my machine, for more than a day or so.
Worst OS I ever had to deal with.
Any file/folder you want to delete can be done in Dos from a Win98 boot floppy. Just change attributes with the attrib command so you can see them, then delete them with the del command.
For the correct syntax to use, see the help files in Dos
eg: For the _restore folder
attrib -h -r -s c:\_restore
del c:\_restore
Do the same for the sys32, just use the right path.

Windows Millennium Edition File System Woes
Ask Ars,
Hello, I was wondering if you knew how I could go about disabling the file protection in Windows ME since it's backups are eating up 500+ megs off my already crapped hard drive.
Thank you, Frank
Windows Me File System Love
Frank, here's the quick way to disable Windows Me File System Protection: Start>Settings>Control Panel>System. Go to the |Performance| tab, and click on the 'File System' button. Just lower the System Restore disk space slider to the minimum if you simply want to reclaim space while maintaining the benefits of System Restore.
If you want to completely disable System Restore, go to the |Troubleshooting| tab. Check the 'Disable System Restore' box. Simple? You bet!
But wait...
Windows Me File System Angst
In the root of your C: drive (your default boot volume) will be a hidden directory named '_Restore'. Microsoft is not dumb; realizing that there are hordes of would-be System Restore Removers roaming the PC world, they not only made the folder hidden, but put an '_' in front of it to throw you off. Don't be fooled by the underscore...that's the folder you want.
After disabling System Restore, you can just delete this folder. Right? Hmmm...mine uses up an average of 32-40 megs of disk space even with System Restore disabled. When you try to delete the folder, Windows Me tells you (politely) that the folder is still in use, and cannot be deleted.
Well, we're gonna have to fix that, now aren't we? =)
Warning: After fooling around with System Restore via repeated disabling and re-enabling, I could no longer enable System Restore. In addition, I could no longer access the |Performance| tab in the File System applet. I'll note what finally fixed this below, but just be aware that you could create a situation where System Restore and the File System applet no longer perform as expected.
Windows Me System Restore: How to Excise Cleanly (without a hammer)
Time to fire up the Registry Editor (Start>Run>Regedit). In the Registry, keys expand out and are hierarchal just like browsing folders in Windows Explorer. Here's the key we're hunting for:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\PerUser_PCHealth
Drill down to that PerUser_PCHealth key. Inside ( click on it to highlight it) you'll see the following value:
"IsInstalled"=hex:01,00,00,00
Or, at least that's what it really looks like. You won't see the quotes, or the '=hex', in the regedit-modified view. It will look more like this:
IsInstalled 01 00 00 00
Right-click on the key, and select 'Modify'. This will bring up the Registry hex editor. Hit your delete key twice (removing the 01), and then type two '0's (zeros) and hit 'OK'. You should now see:
IsInstalled 00 00 00 00
Close Regedit and reboot.
When your system comes back up, you should be able to delete the '_Restore' folder just fine, and reclaim that disk space.
Recalling the warning I mentioned above, here's what I did to fix the File System applet once it stopped responding (which appeared to be a direct result of changing the System Restore settings repeatedly). I set the 'IsInstalled' registry key to '00 00 00 00' and rebooted. Then I set the 'IsInstalled' registry key to '01 00 00 00' and rebooted again.
Then I re-ran the System Restore applet; it restored itself and my File System applet was also back to normal. Oh, and it created another '_Restore' directory that I couldn't delete
.
For the Help system on using the System Restore application, head to Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore. For more detailed information, reference this Microsoft Product Support Services Article.
Regedit Uh-Oh's
In case you make a mistake editing the registry, here's the full System Restore registry key:
----Begin Copy Below This Line---
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\PerUser_PCHealth]
@="System Restore"
"IsInstalled"=hex:01,00,00,00
"Version"="4,90,1,1"
"StubPath"="rundll.exe C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\\setupx.dll,InstallHinfSection PerUser_PCHealth 64
C:\\WINDOWS\\INF\\pchealth.inf"
---End Copy Above This Line---
To restore this, simply open notepad and copy the text above into it. Copy between the notated lines. Save the file, and name it whatever you'd like. After you save the file, rename the extension from '.txt' to '.reg'. Then, right-click on the file and select Merge. Presto! Registry key restored.

Still can't delete it. Ugh. This is getting fustrating.
I think my problem now is having this folder come up every time the computer start.
c:\windows\temp\sys32
but this sys32 folder is full of garbage like "free download" and stuff like that. The file grows when you press f5 and each files in this folder is about 330k. Also, when you open it, nothing happens.
I could delete it everytime I open the comp but that really bugs me. How do I stop this file from coming back? I tried a read-only folder, that didn't work. I deleted the temp folder but I think you need it.
Is there some site/program that diagnoze problems?
