Question About Networking??

How would you network two computers? I want to burn some songs onto a disc but the burner is one computer the songs are on this computer. So I just want to know how you would network the two computer. The one with the burner has Win98 and this computer has WinMe if that helps.

Each PC will require a NIC (Network Interface Card). You can use a crossover cable, or a hub or switch.

On the software side, each PC will need:

File/Printer Sharing and Client for MS Networks installed and bound to the LAN protocol.
A unique host name and identical workgroups.
Folders/drives need to be shared by right clicking and choosing sharing...
Logon to each PC using credentials that will be used on sharesd folders/drives.

Do you plan on sharing an internet connection as well?

All 3 of my computers are sharing one internet connection through a hub.

I keep getting an error when I try to access the network. One is when I'm able to access the network and access my computer but not the other computer. Second is when I can't access the network at all. I followed you steps and also follwed the steps from http://www.howstuffworks.com

Try using the network wizard in ME, I had to do that to get the network to see my 98 machines. Just make a floppy disc in ME and use it on all other PC's

Questions, Are you using a hub with software like IShare to connect to the internet? Did you give access to the firewall if you have one to access the other computers. Are all the computers on the same subnet and if so do the IP addresses work with the subnet? When you do get connection do not try to burn a CD from across the network, you will probably always get a buffer underrun error. Transfer files to computer with burner, then proceed. If you need ideas for IP addresses and subnets that you can you with you network just let me know. Also are the share on each computer read access, wrote access or full control or with password?

Also see if you can see the share on the computer that has the share through network neighbourhood or my network places for ME. Eg. Computer 1 has a c: drive shared. Open network neighbourhood on computer 1, then double click entire network and you should see the shares. Sometimes there is a delay, so try a couple times. You may have to play the restart game a couple of times with each computer.

I have a different problem now. When I try to access the network I can but only to the computer that I'm on. Like if I was on the computer with WinME then I can only access that but not the computer with Win98 even though it is shown on the network. Same thing goes for Win98 but vice versa. And yes both computers were on when I tried this.

And nightowl_123 that is alot of questions to ask at one time. I don't know about using a hub to connect to internet but I do have a Netgear hub that allows all three of my computers to use DSL. And as for the rest of the questions, beats the crap out of me since I don't understand them. You might want to go a little slower and use small words and questions when talking to me.

Alright, sorry about that, I get ahead of myself sometimes. You gave a good picture here. What are your IP and subnet that each computer is using. To check, click start, Run, then type winipcfg and hit enter. You will notice a drop down menu(arrow), There should be PPP adapter and then the name of your network card. Choose the network card, then write down your IP and subnet and do the same for the other computer. Then get back to be, I will tell you if they are compatible. I had the same problem using a subnet of 255.255.255.0 which gave the same problems. If you don't want to share that info then try to use IP address 192.168.1.12 with subnet 255.255.255.1 and on computer 2 try using 192.168.1.13 and subnet 255.255.255.1. This should work. You will have to restart your computers a couple of times throughout the procedure. Let me know if it works.

The computer with WinME does have ZoneAlarm. But not the computer with Win98 which doesn't have ZoneAlarm.

You don't have to give me the info. I can just give you some examples. Also, maybe you should e-mail me instead of posting for everyone to see. I couldn't hack my way into a cereal box. I am an MCSE but not a hacker or cracker. I never had the interest to do those thinks. Before you give me the info try turning off zonealarm and see if you can connect, you may have configured the access through the firewall wrong. Then if it does not work, put the firewall back up and then e-mail me.

Cool, I was gonna say uninstall and re-install, ZA has been known to do that to some networks and I even had it prevent my cable modem from getting online once, took a tier 3 At At&t to tell me that. Glad you got it workin
