Netgear RT314 trouble

Post by SRF01 »

I just hooked up my new netgear RT314 router.

The first time I hooked it up I connected first try with the win2000 comp just using the command prompt telnet. The trouble is I cannot connect to the router from the win2000 computer anymore. I havent changed anything on the router except the password. I have tried using the web browser and the command prompt and the hyperterminal but none are working.

I can use the telnet and the web based connection from my other two computers both are win98 comps.

Also I am not able to ping any other computers on the network or the router or any web address or use cuteFTP from the 2000 computer but can do all those with the two 98 computers. I can however see and access all other computers on the network and trade files with them and surf and play online games with all the comps including the 2000 comp... I just don't get it...

Nevermind... Sorry, I figured it out.

It was ZoneAlarm. As soon as I uninstalled it it worked just fine. I guess even though i disabled it - when I rebooted the comp it must have started some services in the background.

But I still can't access the router from IE5 on the win2000 comp.
Strange all the others comps and browsers work fine.

Are the clients setup dynamically or statically? I recommend static configuration because it will be easier to forward ports if the need ever presents itself, and the systems should boot faster because they are not waiting to be assigned an IP by the router's DHCP server.

PC #1
IP address: 192.168.1.2 (assuming router's internal IP is 192.168.1.1)
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: same as router's internal IP
DNS: router's internal IP or the ISP's actual primary/secondary DNS servers

PC #2
IP address: 192.168.1.3
subnet, gateway and DNS same as PC #1

etc.

I recommend using NetBEUI as the LAN protocol b/c it isn't routable over the internet, and should be faster than TCP/IP on a smaller network such as yours. If you deside to use NetBEUI, be sure to unbind File/Printer Sharing and Client for MS Networks from TCP/IP and bind them to NetBEUI instead.

Clear the IE cache. That always cause havoc when trying to cnnect to the web interface. Also, once you get everything setup -- excellent instructions there from glc1, by the way -- then setup ZA and you'll be set to go.

I get the same exact situation with one of my computers and my Linksys router. All the computers except one can connect to the web admin of the router. When I try to connect from that one computer, it says it can't reach it. And about 70% of the time after that fails, the acess to the internet is shot for all my computers.

It doesn't seem to matter what OS is installed on the box with problems. Switching cables and ports doesn't make a difference. Assigning the IP statically either keeps the problem or causes the problem PC to ONLY be able to access the router but not see past it to the internet.

Some peices:

PC with KK266 mobo and Netgear FA311 NIC -- Bad
PC with BH6 mobo and Netgear FA310TX NIC -- Good
Mac G3 with built-in NIC -- Good.

BTW, I don't use ZoneAlarm.

Ok
So what is the best way to unbind File/Printer Sharing and Client for MS Networks from TCP/IP and bind them to NetBEUI instead.

I have TCP/IP and NetBEUI in the settings for all comps. But also have File/Printer Sharing and Client for MS Networks on all the comps.
All comps access the internet through the router now as opposed to the ICS which is how it was setup before.

Check the bindings.

Win2k: Start | Settings | Network and Dial-up Connections | Advanced | Advanced Options...

Should look as follows:

As for Win98, see the bindings tab under the network properties.

I have the same router, Try doing this. Unplug the WAN cable from the router. Then try again from that computer to conect to the router using IE. It should work, if not try restarting the router with the WAN still disconnected. It is not a solution, but at least you know where the problem is steming from. Have you ever tryed to upgrade the software on the router. I get an error -11 in mid install using FTP to do the transfer.
