sharing a printer on a network, help.

Post by Rings890 »

Two machines, one is Win ME, the other is WIn XP (home), The printer is a Lexmark Z52 (USB). Printer physicaly connected to the XP machine. How do I get the Win ME computer to use the network printer? The Win ME machine sees the printer on the network but when I go to print documents from the Win ME machine and it gives the message that it cant communicate with the printer.

Share the printer on the WinXP machine by going to your printer folder and right clicking on the printer. From the Printer folder on the WinME machine, click Add Printer and select a network printer. Then browse for the printer that's shared on XP.

the printer is shard from the xp machine, and I set up the printer as a network printer on the ME machine. Still can't communicate with the printer.

Go to the Ports tab on the printer properties and make sure the correct path is shown (on the WinMe Machine).

ok, double checked that, it's good. I am going to try removing the printer from both machines, unistalling it and then putting everything back on. Apperently the printer was originaly connected to the Win ME machine via the printer port.

If it was installed on the ME machine at one time, no need to un-install/re-install...just change the port it prints to from LPT1 to the network path....found easily by changing, network, browse, select, end up with something like

Did you get it to work??

Post by GMD999 »

Rings890... I am curious... did you get it to work?? I have a similar problem with a desktop running XPh and a laptop running Win98se... they are both connected to my LAN through a router (WaveBase)... the laptop is connected via a wireless card.
My Lexmark X73 is connected to the desktop via the USB port.
I also get the same message when I try to print from the laptop!!

I have made sure the printer is shared but I still get the same message. I also can see the printer when I setup a network printer on the laptop... I am able, however, to share files between the two pc's!!

So if you have solved your issue please let us know how...

Thanks,

GMD999 :)

I got mine to share by installing the drivers on the WinME machine as if the printer was connected to LPT1: on the WinME machine.

Then I reconfigured the port from LPT1: to the network share on the WinME machine.

I would suggest downloading the ME drivers from Lexmark and installing it on the ME machine as if it actually were physically connected to the ME machine. Then just change the port to the network share and it should work just fine.

I recently shared my lexmark Z42 printer between my XP pro machine and my 98 laptop. Heres what I did.

1st. Download the latest drivers on both machines(xp drivers for the XP machine, and winME drivers for the WinME machine)

2nd. on the XP machine, share the lexmark(so it should show up on the network, under network properties on the ME), when XP asks do you want to install drivers for other OSs, make sure you don't check anything.

3rd. On the ME machine, click network neighborhood, double click on the XP machine(whatever name you assigned to it), and the printer should show up, right click on the printer, and click capture printer port.

4th. Try to print something, and if it works, your all set.

personal messages. Go to the bottom of the first SG page- should be there.

Wait a minute.... you sent me one before... you know where they are!
