Networking with a Linksys BEFSR41?

Post by typeVR6 »

Hoping to get some answers from you very knowledgeable ppl! For the majority, I'm hoping this question is simple. Can I set up a network via the LinkSys BEFSR41 router? I know it's main purpose is to share the Cable [internet] connection, but is it possible to setup a network between the two computers as well? Primarily to see each computers HDD? IF it is, any links/suggestions that might help me setup this network?

Thanks in advance!

Yes.

Well, once the router is configured for the internet connection, setup your computers by either manually assigning IPs, subnet masks, gateways and DNS servers or use the router's DHCP server and set your computers to automatically obtain this info. Also, place the computers under the same workgroup and be sure each has a unique host name. Before I can proceed with the actual procedure for sharing drives/folders, I need to know which OS's are involved, as resource sharing and permission/user setup varies.

OK, I'm not running XP, so I wont be able to provide step by step instructions, just general. First, share the desired drives/folders (right clicking on them and selecting sharing should get you started). Then you will have to setup permissions and accounts for each computer to login to when accessing shares. You may want to search the 'net for info pertaining to permissions and user accounts under XP or wait 'til some with XP can post. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
