What package are you paying for? I had the 256 down, and would only get 180 - 200 on speed tests (With Charter PA) .....3 times faster than 56k!! Very unhappy!!! :(

You are lucky. Look at my Comcrap speed:

Test running.........
** Speed 85(down)/106(up) kbps **
About modem speed!
Logged result.
Finish.

They should change their name to Comcast Low-Speed Internet.

There is a big thread going on about this problem here:

Sprint ION no longer exists. I don't know if I'd be recommending it to people.
From http://shop.sprint.com/sprintnco/ion/we ... /index.jsp

Sprint is suspending efforts to acquire residential and
commercial Sprint ION customers. If you are a current
Sprint ION customer please check your email for
communication from Sprint.

FAQs regarding the discontinuation of ION:

Q: What is the status of the Sprint ION business?
A: Sprint has made a decision to discontinue Sprint ION services.
Several factors contributed to this decision, including the state of
the economy. The overriding factor was that a return on investment
could not be realized in a time period that was acceptable in today's
financial environment.

Q: What will happen to my existing ION service?
A: Sprint will be notifying customers and regulators, and seeking
approval from state and federal regulators as necessary to
discontinue the service and migrate customers off of Sprint ION.
You will receive notification of transition plans and be given
sufficient time to find alternative solutions for your communication needs.

Q: How will I receive information from Sprint?
A: Within a couple of weeks you will receive a letter that will
provide you with pertinent information about your service and the
disconnect process. Our intention is to make your transition as easy
as possible. The letter should answer any questions that you may
have. In the meantime, we suggest that you begin to explore
alternative solutions for your communication needs.

Q: How long can I keep my ION service?
How will I know when you are going to discontinue the service?
A: The letter you will receive outlines the transition schedule.

Q: Will Sprint compensate me for taking the service down
and out of my house?
A: The letter you receive will outline how you will be compensated for
discontinuing your service.

Q: I just signed up for ION, will you still install my home with the
service?
A: Unfortunately, we will cancel your installation. The current
environment makes it difficult for Sprint to continue to deliver Sprint
ION services economically. Therefore, Sprint has sought approval from
federal and state regulators to discontinue offering Sprint ION service
and plans to do so immediately upon obtaining that approval.

Q: What other alternatives do I have for high-speed Internet access?
Do I also need to replace my long distance service?
A: Our customer care representatives can provide you with a list of
alternative high speed Internet providers. Call 1-8-SPRINT-ION for
that information. We are happy to continue offering Sprint long
distance service.

Oops, never mind, my bad. It looks like they dropped the ION name along with the voice service to try their hand at DSL again. :)

It just depends on your local systems. I'm on Comcast.

It is possible to hack cable modems to run uncapped. I used to be sceptical, but since I've seen it with my own eyes.... Part of this 'hack' can be used to prioritize your packets, giving you unrestricted access to any/all upstream bandwidth on your port. I'm not sure how widespread the abuse of this vulnerability is at this point, but it could potentially suck up a lot of bandwidth.

**Most likely are the more mundane explanations: that your local cable system is underbuilt, overcombined, or is having problems with its optical circuit.

Not to mention you'd get caught and your service taken away.

Comcast Monmouth County NJ

Your download speed : 1158999 bps, or 1158 kbps.
Browsers would show : about a 141.4 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 119402 bps, or 119 kbps

This is typical. Solid connection though. I've never had a problem with my connection at all. Guess I'm lucky.

I have Comcast in central Jersey. my speed tests and pings are pretty consistent. I know Comcast has big problems with their system in some areas. I'm one of the lucky few with a good net connection.

CHSI Does *NOT* Blow Here

Post by PGHammer »

I may be a rare duck, but CHSI decidedly does *not* blow here in Prince George's County, MD.

I've had the service for over a year and my serivce has been *consistently* fast (except for the typical periods when bandwidth gets chewed up Internet-wide); typically 1.4 to 1.5 Mbits/sec downstream and 112 Kbits/sec upstream.

It *could* relate to the cable modem I have (SURFboard SB-4100), which is one of the better DOCSIS cable modems, and that I use a NIC (as opposed to USB); however, between the modem and the PC is a 10-Mbit-only *hub* (shared connection to another PC); however, I have no complaints here.

*Willingly* go back to dial-up? (DSL is not an option here; too far from the central office.) No, thank you.

I'm anywhere from 1400 to 1200. I happy with that for now if they offered a faster connection for not much more I take that too. :)

LOL are u kidding? With @home we used to be able to pull speeds around 3.0mb down / and around 300kb up for the same price you pay for your comcast connection which is limited to 1.5mb/128kb. And whats even more ridiculous is that Comcast wants you to pay more for higher speeds , that @home offered for the same price you pay for your 1.5mb/128kb.

@home is gone. Comcast is giving me just what said they would 1500/128. You can always go to DSL or dail-up. Yes @home was faster but this is as good as I can get so I'm not dewelling on the negative.

Yeah. I'm in PG too. I only had trouble during the transition. Now Everything is as smooth as it was BEFORE the transition. I just wish the speed was the same...

Cable ISPs can't be compared. They run things differently. Even same ISP but different regions can vary. That's just the way it is with cable. If your paying for and receiving 1.5/128, then you can't complain. Think of those who are having trouble with their connections.

Hi

Since you have comcast I would like to ask a question. I am getting hooked up with it and have a cable router. Can I use it to share my internet connection with another pc or will I have to get a second ip addr?

Thanks

Nope. However, they probably wont offer tech support, as they rather you pay for another IP, so just neglect to mention the router. :)

Yes. If you plan on putting Linux behind the router too, just setup the TCP/IP stack automatically obtain an IP (if you plan on using your router's DHCP server). If not, manually assign an internal IP (based on router's internal IP), subnet of 255.255.255.0, and gateway (same as router's internal IP). Either way, the workgroup will need to be the same as all other system behind the router and the host name will need to be unique.

Not really, though I have fooled with many distros over the last year or so on my test bed.
