Didn't he say Canadians HalfLifer??? Image

For me, cogeco@home is better than sympatico DSL.

cable: 3-4mbps down/ 384kbps up
DSL: 1mbps down/120kbps up

Some places will have Rogers@home instead of Cogeco, but the speeds are the same.

Cable is better. All the way. Better speeds both ways, and no additional software needed.

Shaw@Home all the way! My speed is 3.5Mbps down and 1515kbps up, according to PCPITSTOP.COM, i cannot use DSLR until Exodus gets its act together cause Shaw right now is routing on a back up link to them. However as soon as DSLReports is on a good path I will immediately test my cable and post the speeds from them. Generaly for me PCPITSTOP is a slight bit slower for speed than DSLR east coast server. Any comments?

wow... 3.5Mbps... what kind of tweak did you use?
I also use Shaw@Home in Toronto, but only around 900Kbps in PCPITSTOP.COM

I did have cable from Cogeco but is sucked....0-40KB/sec.

So I got DSL from Sympatico and now I get 125KB/sec or so all the time

If you really want to test your speed with Rogers@Home download a file from TUCOWS located on cgocable!

http://tucows.cgocable.net

I get between 220 - 330KB/s

I'm located in Toronto, Ontario and still using a crapy old Lancity modem Image

I think you should try out both yourself.

If you have Shaw as cable provider, go for it. Their service is way better the Rogers. My neighbourhood was with Shaw until Rogers took over and I had problems until I finally got someone to come.

I haven't used Bell, my friend has it and she said it's ok.

But I'd advise you to try both.

Who here is from Windsor or surrounding area? Just curious.
COGECO all the way, getting on average 200KB/s and sometimes 240KB/s (almost at capped speed ) on every file. DSL waaaaaaay to slow, trust me, my friends have it.

ADSL

Post by dwayne76 »

I have had both, Rogers at home and Sympatico HSE. As far as speed goes, ADSL is faster ( according to the speed check, I'm getting about 952kB on the D/L) on the D/L but slower on the U/L. Unless you plan on running an FTP, this should be no issue. The cost, both are about the same, though if you are like me and are using satalite for your TV service then Rogers is an extra $10 a month. Also, it is far easier to have broadband over your home network from Bell HSE, in fact Bell incourges its subscribers to do just that. Rogers will charge you a fee for every extra connection you want on your account, I believe it is around $10 per extra connection. The other consideration is the service up time, I have had Bell HSE for about a year, and have never been without service. Rogers on the other hand, about once a month there was a service interuption. As for customer service, I can't speak for Bell, as I have never had a problem (with the exception of my sisters problem, though it is a hardware issue) :) Rogers though; wow rude is their middle name.

Just my $.02

I also have both (for the next 6 months)...I have had Rogers for 2 yrs and their tech support is rude as all of hell.
My recent HSE is more stable and consistent. If you play games online HSE may not be for you, but if you surf and download, then HSE is great. Because you get a new IP every time you go on, you can't have a server attached, no problem for me..don't need one. On HSE you have to be prepared to twaek the PPPoE to get your maximum speed.
Rogers fluctuates too much, from slower than a snail to fast, but it NEVER stays fast, and if you are downloading a large file and leave, it disconnects and you have to start over again. On Rogers you ALWAYS get the same IP leased to you (not a good thing if security is a concern). No tweaking is required as the protocol is the normal TCP/IP.
I don't need the hassle with Rogers "holier than thou" and "take it or leave it" attitude and their "patronizing rude" techies on the phone..
I am getting rid of it, including the quasi digital TV they charge so much for.... I am getting EspressVu....goodbye Rogers.
Enough is enough

Fredra, I couldn agree more. Rogers customer "SERVICE" is about bad as it gets with Tech supports. I'm just waiting for Sprint to offer DSL, for res customers (Wifey works for 'em, employee discount? :D ). I must say I really, really like HSE.

Hey Dwayne76
When you get it you will be pleasantly surprised at the consistency of speed. It is by no means as fast as Rogers is on the best days, but since Rogers fluctuates the average of HSE becomes faster.
Go here as this guy has more insight into DSL than anyone I know, also you can drop him a line and he will respond. He has helped me lots of times.
Good Luck pal.

I bet it must be a location thing then.. I don't live too far from you and I love cable... more than hse... I had more troubles with hse in the first 2 months than my entire 2 yrs with cable.... maybe it's just luck...

But if there's anything better out there.. I would love to take a whack at it..

You are right, location does play a big part for the speed of the connection. However, you cut and pasted the part of my post where I was commenting on the quality of customer care from Rogers Tech support. I hope you never have to deal with them, good for you that your Internet service is working okay, I guess you're lucky. Have you considered 6/49, or Super 7 :D Oh, if you win I get a cut :p

WHOA!!!

I need to win the lottery..I have to win the lottery
Hey immortal
No flame intended here, (so pls don't go there)...lol
I have both Rogers and HSE..on two different PC's on separate routers.
When I do a test from here , I get on the Rogers 24 times faster than a 56K, and on the HSE I get 19 times faster. (tested at various times, results do not vary)
Now I go and download a file (8.77MB) and the Rogers takes 1 min 6 sec and the HSE takes 1min 5 sec.
IMHO the real world download is almost the same (all things being equal)
So let us assume that my UN-scientific tests are within the bounds of their maximum... it would seem to me that I have to consider the other PROS and CONS of each connection. One of which is "consistency" in being online and also the speed.
Now for me the added functionality of getting my email wherever I am (once I can get a connection) in Canada or US is a very big thing, as I travel a fair amount and that means I can still get my emails from HSE, but not from Rogers.
What I am trying to say is that Rogers is faster (when it is good), but it fluctuates to the low end a lot, while HSE gives you a consistent speed, whether it is 7pm or 2am.
So your getting terrific speed is accepted for Rogers, but try it sometime when every kid is home from school and playing online games, and maybe you will notice the fluctuation in speed, or if anyone on your node has a server attached, then you pay the penalty of slower speeds when people attach to that server.
Remember, you get the same IP address repeatedly, so a server being attached is a no brainer. As opposed to HSE where you get a new IP every time.
Just my 2 cents...
Now I know I have to win 649...lol

hehe.. I'm thinking of getting the big ticket...

actually I find roger's support much better than hse... hse is dumb and rude... roger's are much friendlier and know just a tad more... maybe I'm just lucky..

I got hse right at hte beggining so it might be why it's all screwed up and stuf.f... maybe it's much better now.. but I won't switch for anything....

unless there's something better... hmm... and cheaper

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

something else.. I'd rather have my ip all the same all the time because I do tend to play a bit of games with my buddies from time to time and I don't like the ip changed.... that was one of the problems with hse for me... also.. what is this log in thing... I dislike logging in..... I know blah blah.. I can go on forever but u get me..

I also like how rogers give me a much lower ping in games.. I did notice a very noticable increase in downloads speeds.. but then again.. hse might have changed since I used it before.... I don't know how it works now but I'm just stating my own experiences...

but since I've had such bad services from hse I don't know how I can ever go back... bad bad memories....

Ya, HSE is not the greatest for games, but the only game I really play is Empire Earth. I havn't really noticed any problems with it though. @Home does offer better ping for 'the buck'. I just got bit twice from Rogers, I got them when it was first available in Newmarket as a test, was okay at first, but once the problems started they never ended. I then tried them again a few years later when I lived in Toronto, thinking that Rogers had fixed all the problems, nope. Actually, this is where I discovered the poor customer service, when Rogers was @HOME. I then got Rogers again when I bought my house in Bradford. I actually had HSE and Rogers for awhile, and found that HSE was... faster  So I dumped Rogers again. It is not like I didn;t give them a chance, a gave them two chances to get it right, the third time was only 'cause of the D/L speed.

Hey immortal
Glad to know everything is cool with you...
God, it is good to be Canadian (will get some feedback with that one...LOL)
I agree that online game playing is much better with Rogers and the further away from the CO is the worse (read slow) it is on HSE.
What bothers me is the talk of "capping" by both Rogers and HSE.
The strong word around is that they intend to limit how much you can download in any given month, if you exceed that limit, then you get charged big bucks.
Go here to read up about it and I urge you to sign the petition started by Bob Carrick which is to be sent to both Rogers and Bell, for them to stop those plans of capping.
This "capping" will affect every Canadian on broadband, so please read, and try to get involved.
Maybe our strength in numbers will have some impact in how they implement arbitary practices.
Thank you
