Will Hotline or other filesharing programs work behind a hardware-router ?

Post by InternetBug »

Hy !

I'm asking again, because I didn't get a clear answer.

I want to share a DSL-connection with an external DSL-modem and a hardware router.

Will any users from the web be able to connect to my PC, one of the two that will use the shared connection, that means both share the same IP !

I want to run a hotline server on one of the two PCs, any user connecting to the IP of my router shall be redirected to the one specific PC !

??

Thanx for your answers

Almost every NAT router has port forwarding capabilities. If you know which ports your server binds to then the answer is probably yes. Some routers are better than others.

Port forwarding tells the router to send all requests for the specific port numbers you enter to a single machine on your lan. If you can host that app without the router then you should be able to with it.

With a Linksys router all you need to do is set up the DMZ and use the IP adress in there as the IP on the computer that runs the hotline server. That's it.

DMZ will work as well - just make sure that you have that box locked down so that only the ports you want are open. In the DMZ, all ports are forwarded to that particular box (bypassing all security that the router provides).
