I'm about eighty percent sure about this one.
From the start of the second sentence, I already assumed that you were running winxp. WinXP doesnt install everything from the start of the hard drive like everything else does. It actually installs everything a little towards the middle. This leaves the begining of the hard drive open. What happens over that first week is that winxp starts to learn what is used most often. It then takes those programs and moves then to the front of the hard drive. It does all this while you're not using the computer. It is also updating the system restore while you're not using the comptuer.
That's why you'll see the ahrd drive running while you're not around. Just good 'ole winxp cleaning up.

I'm a little tired right now, but I have thought of a couple of ideas. The first is that you install a program that'll let you know exactly what is running. I cant think of any off the tope of my head, but there are several for free. My first guess is either a trojan or virus like creature rolling around. If you have a cable/always on connection, I would consider unplugging it and see if it continues.
If you have the time, perhaps you should turn off everything you have running in the background and walk away. See if the problem persists. I doubt this is a hard drive problem, but who knows?
It could even be something you wouldnt expect. Some sort of 'freeware' that is spying on what you have, hoping to report it backwithout your knowledge.

It could be a lot of things.
Like Norton, or some anti virus proggie updating itself automatically, your firewall could be writing to a log, or any program running in the background (depends what's running) Chat progams can write to the drive when new messages come in
I doubt it's a bad HD.
Watch the send light on your cable modem (if you have one that is) for activity at the same time the drive is making noise. If so, your PC is talking to someone over the net.

Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute, and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour, and it seems like a minute. THAT'S relativity.
