Hi, this would be my first post here, i am looking to bulid a new computer, i was going to go with a AMD XP 1600, put either 256MB or 512MB of Ram, 40GIG Hard Drive, i already have a CD-RW and a DVD-Rom. I am also debating which to run Windows 200 Pro or Windows XP. Is this a good Motherboard? a couple of people told me to get one that works with DDR or RD Ram. Any Suggestions would be great and i really cant spend more then $400
Thanks in Advance

uhh
the one real lesson that should be learned first is that a good soli motherboard base must be establish before you can build upon it. If you buy a less known brand with "variable" performance just because it's $30 dollars cheaper, don't complain at the end of the day.
Trust me on this one, get either a Asus or Abit board that has the via KT266A chipset on it. The MSI is also nice, but I'm a bit weary of that company myself. A board from one of these companies may cost around $140USD
As for the ram, if you are a gaming and do a lot of multitasking, 512mb of DDR should do you well, 256 for just your average gaming and what not. Ram is a bit pricey at the moment, so stick with 256mb for now.
The OS of choice right now is Windows XP, if you get anything less then this, unless it's Win2k (in which case less updating), you will have to go through a great deal of downloading and updating drivers and what not. (Not to say that you won't for XP, it's just A LOT less.)
As for the Hard drive, based on personal and third party experiences, the IBM Desk 60GXP 40 gig hard drive is among the elite and for the price on it, it's definately worth it. Not only is it silent when compared to that of Maxtor's acoustic technology (which slows down the rpms of the drive), it still have the speed and peformance as listed.
