Just to let you guys know the @home network in Denver is being shutdown Friday. I just wanted to vent my frustrations and say that this sucks!!!

What reliable source do you have for this? The last publication I saw said that there was a possibility that it would shut down if the court ruled in favor of the creditor's motion.

From a few sources that work at the AT&T broadband office here in Denver. They say it is a 90% chance. That's pretty good odds.

Thats rough. We are really lucky in the DC area as we had cable internet long before comcast aquired the internet piece of our local cable company. I asked a sales peron just last week because I am getting ready to move down the street, and she said our connection will persist - with or without comcast.

I have had service with ATT@home for 9 months and have not lost connection once. I love my connection.

If there is a loss of connection, more than likely it will be short lived. I think 4 million people, and the revenue it generates, will necessitate a quick resolution to the problem...

Me too, I'm so pissed. Charter wants me to switch to their charter pipeline (instead of charter@home) anyway it's the same damn cost but it's only 512kbits/sec instead of 3-5 mbits /sec. Now what? and dsl will be usb! MY GOD im pissed

Rumor has it that in some areas, AT&T is going to take up ISP activities from Excite. In those areas, AT&T will be the cable provider and the ISP.

1. it is not a done deal YET that @Home will turn off the network

2. Charter Shaw Adelphia and Rogers are the only ones right now close to being prepared to make the switch

3. Even if you are on ATT @Home you could still easily feel the hit
ATT is the owner of the @Home backbone with a lease agreement to @Home..........ATT is specifically bidding for @Home to make sure no one else gains this lease out from under them thereby taking control of the @Home network....rumour has the bid up from 370 mil to 550+ mil

4. even though i believe ATT runs some of the best BB networks on earth it will not be that easy to switch over to a differant network if they lose the lease on the @Home network or lose access to it for a time...........even if they could just flip switches and unplug cables and move them around ect then their is still load balancing/email/web space/routing tables ect to contend with

5. it is not as easy as it seams to switch networks you FIRST have to have the physical connection to THAT new network @Home controls the access from the headends to the @Home backbone.....ALL the cable companies will need to have a DIFFERANT physical connection to their new network before anything else............IE digging and boring and trenching and lighting fibre

so even if ATT has a nice backbone 3 miles form youe headend they must still make the connection to that backbone IF they lose the @Home backbone this is the real issue not the backbone it self, but the connectivity to whatever new backbone is used from whoever.....it would be like having 500 highways 3 miles from you, but no road to access them except the one controled by @Home if you lose that you have to build a new road to the highway....no matter how good or who owns the highway

i would make backup provisions no matter who you are on as an MSO if the MSO uses or recently used @Home if you think it is not at panic stage then Y is comcast telling people to sign up for NETZERO!!!!!!..........talk about a comcast pride buster (comcast is *******es anyway)

also many of you dog on @Home well you are in for a treat see the post form the Charter sub above where he now has up and download caps......you all will see your speeds soon come in packages just like DSL.....you will see much more crack down on servers ect and ports blocked.....you will see higher bills.....you will see support quailty slip further than it has in the last 5 months....you will see more crazy page unreachable/email/webspace issues

the MSOs used @Home as a test bed and a whipping boy to enable them to gain an understanding of broadband that they did not have....they lied and told half truths about issues to make @Home look bad and they did not enforct the AUP to see what happened when things were left to go on

now that they have learned they are going to take the knowledge they stole from @Home and they new equipment they are getting and they are going to use it to rape you for more money, and to control your use and access even more and to try and squeeze you harder to buy other services they plan on rolling out in the future.....bye bye servers....hello up and DOWN caps....hello higher prices.....bye bye vpn....pc anywhere ect.......watch for them to try and see if you are running a NAT or router with more than 1 PC and then charge you for it see this article http://www.cedmagazine.com/ced/2001/1101/11d.htm

and you all thought DOCSIS was to give you everything like high upload and servers...........WRONG it is to CONTROL everything

sorry to piss on the parade and to those of you that were happy with @Home and said the same as me before sorry to see your service go and you get screwed....to those that dogged @Home to no end for nothing.....you are going to get what you want.....well maybe not what you want but you are going to GET IT for sure

i realized working as a tech that the cable companies do not view BB as a service differant than cable....they lie and say it is great for business and then when it goes down they are slower to send someone out than they are for cable tv??? they feel they know what is best and that it is THEIR network so they will formulate and reformulate the policies for that network as THEY SEE FIT just like the line up of chanels on cable tv....without YOUR input so what if you liked espn.....we have FOX now.....there is no differance than Discovery and Nickaloadian.....just be happy we gave you any chanel back..............get ready for the same attitude and more for your internet

again these companies are not spending cash and raping @Home at the risk of being taken to court just to give you 5 MB down and 1.5MB up and run a server and 5 computers service they are doing it to screw you as a captive customer and to give you what they see fit when they see fit.....just see the post about Charter above....charter is just the first

telling me is preaching to the preacher you should be pissed off i was really not directing all my comments to someone with reasonable expectations, but to those that come in here and cheer that @Home is gone cause they falsely believe @Home went under because of caps....the next provider is not going to be the WONDERISP it is going to be the one that really screws you............well they got what they wanted lets see how they like the future :) :( :o :D ;) :p

i am agreeing with you. they went under because they left the pipes wide open heh..that's why charter's limiting it, but i wish it weren't such a drastic, rediculous limit..the ppl at their helpdesk were helpful in their answers tho.. so they are prepared well at least.. not many providers can say that..some are saying go netzero..that's bull, i suppose i should be happy i still have an option that's reliable.

who is your cable company cyberskye???

Jones/Comcast. All the buildings and trucks still have Jones' logo. They claim that they have always been an 'independant subsid' in the whole comcast@home thang.

I also have SDSL at 768/768 (soon to be a 2.2/2.2 when I move up the street, so I will probably drop teh cable service anyway) with 6 static addresses. So I guess I am luckily insulated from all this. One of the advantages to living in Northern VA - the whole area is wired to the hilt. Hell, I'm a couple of miles from the Pentagon where the whole thing started...

When you think about the applications of broadband - including the ones on the horizon - its amazing how cheap it really is.
