What the...

Post by XenaRule »

I haven't got a clue about what had happened to my network card.

I had came back from class and went online for about 45min and then I slept for a while. I woke up an hour later and went to check my e-mail and an error popped up "Unable to locate http://www.url.com" and I went to check my IP address (winipcfg) and at the IP Address, it said...

Media Disconnected

I've been down since then and that was 12:30pm.

I tried removing the TCP/IP and tried to add it again but my network card isn't showing. When I restart the comp, it appears again.

I went to borrow someone's labtop to check the IP address... but it did not register my IP address, it had her IP address and when I went to renew it. It gave me an error that I cannot get an address.

I've tried everything... and I'm not sure if it's my network card (it's only 2 months old!!!!) or the outlet.

Oh yea, why am I on? Dial-up *shrivers*

you are on ME correct??

1. did the laptop you borrowed have the proper computer name in it (DHCP CLIENT ID)

2. Did the laptop have static settings in ti that might have prevented it from obtaining yours??

3. There is an area when you go to TCP/IP properties on the IP address tap it will say detect connection to network medium un check it and restart then check it again and restart

you might try reinstalling the nic drivers as well

these articles might help, but unfortunately the only thing that sucks worse than windows is microsoft KB............you choose win 98/ME and get articles for excel in win3.1??

you need to know your ip address/subnet/gateway/2 DNS servers/computername/subdomain

go to start->settings->control panel

click on network

highlight the tcp/ip that has your nic listed after it (if you have just one network adapter then there will be 1 tcp/ip and it will not be bound to anything)

after you highlight the tcp/ip that matches your nic you need to hit the propereties button

a new box will pop up and it will be on obtain automatically

set it to specify ip address then enter your ip address and subnet in the boxes

then hit the gateway tab at the top

enter your gateway in and hit add...it will drop to the box below

then hit the DNS tab at the top

put it to specify dns

the host is the same as your computer name the domain is same as the sub domain type it in

then add the 2 dns just like you did the gateway

then add the subdomain below

hit ok and hit ok on network

then when it ask tell it to reboot

if you do not know your ip ect go to start->run type in winipcfg hit ok

in the white box change it over to your nic it will probably be in PPP

then hit the more info button and write down all that is needed and go set in as stated before  :2cool: :rotfl:    :D

Oh that... I tried that too but I didn't specify the DNS address. I could ping to the gateway (duh) but there was no connection at all.

Does it help that I'm actually using a school connection and it's behind some firewall??

What I'm really confused and fustrated about is that it just suddenly happened!

Is there a way where I can find the computer network log?

if you could ping the gateway then there was a connection

if you did not specify the dns servers then no page would come up because a dns server is what converts http://www.cnet.com into 216.200.247.131 which is actually what gets routed out over the internet to fetch the page

so if you could ping the gateway static, but had no dns entered a page would not come up

try it with the DNS

you will need to know your computer name which will be the host on the dns tab and you will need to know your domain/subdomain to enter in they should be the same

no a firewall would not make a differance in this case because your schools network should be steup for that to be inplace

or your school needs a new admin (doupt thats the case)

so try it with the DNS tab filled in

 :2cool: :rotfl:   :p :D :(

What about the WINS Resolution? Does that have any effect?

I'll just go over to the office and bug 'em because I didn't do anything and it suddenly happened!

yes winME has new and improved bugs over 98

the media detection is just one such bug

i have seen an article in the MS KB that said if things dont solve it you might have to run the ME disk

try searching through the KB for MS and see if you can find some differant articles

their KB sucks though   :p ;) :D :o :( :)
