Downloading files

Post by Nighthawk_Ohio »

Well ran IE repair, got rid of Spyware went back to 100 meg of cache and still not fixed.

I friend who has a store and has been in the business for many years, he's not sure why it's DLing the files to a cache dir.

He did a test on his system, DL a file to a dir. he told it to save it to and it was their, zero bites until the file got done and he refreshed, didn't copy if from any cache dir. to the saved dir.

We both have DSL from the same local ISP, they got back to me and said it sounds more like a Windozes and IE 6 problem, not a dsl issue, I wanted to check anyway.

So next test will be Netscape and see how files DL from it.

I going to suggest a new Windozes title to Mr.(money)Gates.

Windows AP

AP: A_ _ Pain

PS Not even going to touch XP, was told it won't run many somewhat "older" programs, and durring it's boot-up it finds these programs and disables them, one at a time and then reboots itself each time, and theres no going back to a earlier version of Windows, you have to do a full reinstall.
And then the price tag for XP, Sorry Mr Gates I'm not going to make any more richer that you are now

Might even go back to Win98 SE more stable than ME.
Sorry

Try this..
Make a new folder on your desktop> call it "Downloaded Files"> then download your files into that folder. See if that makes a difference.
I have one called "Downloaded Programs" and all d/loads are directed to that folder. That way I always have the programs .exe files in one place. When I save a program I save it to disk and the folder automatically comes up in "Save As".
It may get cached somewhere until the d/load is complete, but ther are none of the hassles you are having.
Netscape will only do the same thing as IE.

I tried what you said to do, still same problem.

Ran Netscape, went the to site to get the 12 meg file, Netscape DL window poped up when the site started to send, I told it to "save" and just to see where Netscape default save dir. was, c:\windows\temp\filename.zip. Used Windows explorer and went to that dir. while the file was being saved their. So Netscape didn't use any part of it's cacheing.

So I figure now it's a IE 6 issue, something somewhere on my system got changed in, have no clue. I went and got Getright DL manager, setup a default "save" dir. in it and this worked. So until I can figure out IE 6 I'll just use Getright, in a way it's better if you use it incase the DL stops, you can restart it.

I guess for now I got a fix for this, want to again thank everyone for their help!

IE download folder

Post by phenix0000 »

If you were using IE, then your download was saved to the folder
C:\windows\msdownld.tmp\

It is a temporary place that IE places files into before it is done downloading it.

It is also hidden so people won't see it unless they "show all files" in explorer

That's another reason y I don't use IE. :D

Is this the exlanation of the folder's role?.....

With all d/loads going to this one folder, the action the folder takes on d/load completion is to send the d/load off to the folder you want the file/whatever to go to.

If that is the case, is there a history file that collects and stores a d/load history? I searched for a msdownld.dat file with no success. With the other history gathering files like index.dat, I just thought this could be another one that info could be collected.
