Hey board, I've been having some problems with my Cd Rom drive. It has power cause the little light on it turns on when it starts and my computer reconizes it because it says "Compact Disk" in My Computer when theres no CD in there. The problem is if I put a CD in there it scans it but then nothing happens. I've tried a CD Lens cleaner and that didnt work, and all the cables are connected. Plus I even went to System and looked to see is my CD Driver had a "?" but it didnt. So I decided to go into Safe mode and check it out. I went to System and the Preformence tab and it said these 3 things:
Compatibility mode paging reduces overall system performance.
Drive A is using an MS-DOS compatibility mode file system.
Drive C is using an MS-DOS compatibility mode file system.
What is going on? Oh and I also tried removing the CD Rom from system, and restarting my computer after that but that didnt work either. Do you think it has something to do with the BIOS set up?
first check the preformance tab in normal mode and see if you
still have the msdos compatibility mode if so run antivirus. Run an antivirus anyway......... theres a couple free ones on the web
try housecall.antivirus.com
Spectre(IX), I had that problem a long time ago, sorry I can't remember what caused it, but it's not a bad BIOS I know that.
It may be your drive(s) are being recognized improperly or a bad floppy drive (can't remember for sure)
Try setting up your HD manually in the BIOS, or unplugging your floppy, just to test out my theory.
Norm is correct. It is not your bios. Lets start from the top. The first thing I would do is make sure the cdrom drive is good. Stick the good ole 98 startup disk in the drive and reboot. Start with cdrom support. If your cd drive is normally d: then it will be E: during this. Put say your favorite data cd in the drive. I don't know if you know your way around dos so I just assume you don't. At the a:\> prompt type e: then press enter. from there type dir enter. You should get a file listing of whats on the cd. If not then the drive probably died. If you do then I would suggest a visit to microsoft's knowledge base for the msdos compatability mode problems. Here is one artical out of many for diag'ing this.
Startup again in Safe mode. Go to the Device tab and remove the device while in safe mode. Shut down completely and then restart. Let it reinstall from there.
You'll may find a whole lotta devices in safe mode that you removed a long time before.
I had the same problem with the floppy drive in my new Dell when it first came. Turned out the cable was not plugged in all the way at the rear of the drive. Plugged it in and solved the problem.
