Check my sig for what I think is the best for PIII's...but as you can see, this is a hard question to answer. Best mobo for which side of the pond..a rock stable Intel...or a blue screen prone AMD. (sorry guys, just had to fight back to balakov's "InHell" dig, not going for a flame war) And there is a second level to that question, PIII or P4, or older Athlon or newer T-Bird or Palomino, etc etc etc. And which RAM do you feel like buying. And do you intend to ever upgrade again?

I have more problems out of my dual PENT III then my 1.4AMD.
The main issue I see on SG is that people need to talk about things THEY OWN if you do not OWN both then you dont know one or the other...........Please people quit knocking stuff you do not OWN for there is no "true" experience there. No offense YeOldeStonecat I know you know your stuff but cmon both AMD and Intel have there issues but please dont label one with a blue screen of death..............for I have had a good bit of issues with my Intels.

i suppose it was inevitable, YeOld. its very akin to the Ford/Chevy dichotomy during the musclecar era (and still today if you are a domestic gearhead). the mere mention of the two brands in the same sentence invariably starts some conflict.
i also an part of the AMD camp (BSOD? what the hell is that?), but i know from experience the comparative compatability differences are between AMD & Intel. it has taken some work to work the bugs out of this system, but after it was polished, it has had a nice shine ever since. i would always suggest an Intel system towards a scenario where the 10% incompatability chances cannot be tolerated. the bottom line is, a seamless box is a seamless box, regardless of what CPU/system you like. they both have the capacity for such.
if somebody had a gun to my head and said that if a hardware conflict were to arise, i would die.... then i would have to suggest an Intel-based system. hands down. but if a little extra work would mean a faster system for the money..... you see where i am heading.
just my opinion.....

Heh heh...yup....that's me. Chevy camp, 67 Camaro RS 307 bored a while ago. Loved 'Stangers too though. But the two camps do make it fun to stay in the game, gotta have competition and rivalry.Originally posted by smaier69

Haven't dabbled with them yet, as except for one dual proc Abit Via motherboard I have, I prefer to stick with Intel chipsets, and to my knowledge, haven't seen an Intel chipset for socket 370 that supports DDR. Haven't looked for them either.Originally posted by cybotron r_9
Hi YeOldeStonecat, are there any P3 boards out that support DDR ram yet and what Heatsink do u recomend for P3?
Thnx![]()
But Asus does make one, with the Ali Aladdin Pro 5T chipset which I dont' know much about, haven't played with, so don't have an opinion based on experience.
Below is a link to the Asus TUA266:

As to heatsinks, because of their look which matches everything I have internally, the TT Golden Orbs do the job fine for me. I know they don't perform the best, that there are better ones out there, but properly applied thermal grease wise, it more than does the job for my rigs, and all that I've built, keeping the proc well within a comfy heat range. Only tough part is that damn cam lock which the Orbs have to mount them on sockets....it's VERY CLUMSY and awkward, and takes a lot to get it on the first shot.
My CPU runs about 34 - 35 idle, gets low to mid 40's under load... I hit 51 on a hot day in August once while Quake 3'ing for a few hours straight when my AC was off.
