Help With Rt314 And @home

Post by MartialArtist12 »

I got two computers on the network that I want to have broadband with. I have gotten the first computer to work, but can't seem to get the second one working. It always says it has an error pining the server. I've tried to do the things in the troubleshooting guide but it can't help. Any suggestions?

P.S. I only got the first computer working by having it directly connected to the modem then once I passed all the tests, connected it through the router. I've tried to do that with the second computer but no luck.

Also, the second computer is a laptop with a PCMCIA NIC.

Another question, should all the computers on that specific network connected to the router have a gateway of 192.168.0.1 or just one computer?

Sorry for the desperation, but I need to know how to fix this thing. Does it matter if I installed some tweaks on this site like the @home patch and the generic patch before I had broadband installed?

Another thing. When I try to connect, the laptop says that there is no internet connection and two options are work offline and connect. This didn't happen with the other computer.

192.168.0.1 or just one computer?

does your first computer connect with that gateway? I'm not familiar with routers or anything, but I'm pretty sure that's the wrong gateway. @home only used like 24.*.*.* or 65.*.*.* gateways' from what I remember

I've tried to do that with the second computer but no luck

you tried the dirrect connect to your mdoem with the laptop? did you use the right computer name?

but you'll need to buy an extra computer name, for 4.95/month extra, to get both to work.

No, routers make it so that you can share one IP address. The gateway is the gateway for the router I think and the directions said 192.168.0.1. xxxxx-B? I'll try that.

xxxxx-B didn't work, anyone who has a router and @home tell me how? I tried going to the router menu again by typing in 192.168.0.1 but it won't work anymore with the computer that works.

This information found here will give you insite into setting up your router with an ISP. It's not your ISP, but there are a great deal of similarities and it is using the same router you have.

No, routers make it so that you can share one IP address

that's the thing though. With @home, you need the extra computer name to put in your second computer. the xxxxx-B one.
You need the computer name, cuz that's how @home allows you to get the IP to get online. According to @home, you only have the one computer. your second one isn't even recognized on the network.

Unless you called them up, to get the extra name, or went to home.excite.com and went to Member Services, then click on the home networking link. it will tell you there as well.

You need to get into the "admin" web page of your router by typing 192.168.0.1
If you haven't changed the password, I strongly reccomend you do !

Choose the wizard setup and add in the @home name they gave you ( ci93483-d or whatever it is ).
You may need to call @home to get the full name of your email server, you will enter that into the domain name section ; minus the "mail" at the begining.

Leave DHCP turned on, on the WAN side, turn it off on the LAN side.
Spoof this pc's mac address, give it the ip of your main machine, it should be : 192.168.0.2
Save, exit, logout.

In your computer config...
None of your other computers need to have the @home name in their configuration. The router will take care of that since you entered that in the router setup. Make sure the workgroup name is the same on your pc's.

Also, enable DNS, put in your computers name like, "mom", "pop", or whatever you have named them in the host section.
In domain, put : home.com
You may need to add at least one DNS server address. You will have to find that out because it somewhat pertains to your location.
You can do that by hooking your main pc directly to your cable modem, like the way it was originally setup by the cable co.
Open a dos promt, and type : ipconfig /all
It will list your DNS server address.

Yes, 192.168.0.1 , is the gateway address that should be entered into each pc on your LAN.
Each of your pc's should have an IP address of : 192.168.0.2 > .3 > .4 , and so on for each pc.
Subnet of : 255.255.255.0

That should be enough to get you going, I don't think I left out much. Kinda doing this from memory.
Well gotta go..... off to the football game! :)

No luck, I always fail the ping test. I now can log in to 192.168.0.1 but only on the working computer. My laptop can't access 192.168.0.1 nor any other thing and ALWAYS fails the ping test. Any suggestions? Can it be my NIC? Again, I can't log on to the router page with my laptop and another thing, do I have to add 192.168.0.1 as a gateway for all the computers on the network that want Internet connection? I did, but it didn't work.

Can it be my settings under Internet Options? What should all my LAN settings be under the 'Connections' option?

Well, I talked to technical support and they said I needed an IP address. I said screw that and just tried different ways for two computers to share @home with one IP. I just reinstalled the NIC drivers! How stupid of me, but at least I got it to work without paying 4.95 extra a month!

Just got back from the game.... we won... hehe

Anyway, sounds like you have it going.
If you can't access the web page, open IE, in the security settings, enter the address of your router as a "trusted site", then it should let you in.
