hello everyone, hope you all had a nice labor day weekend. I had some time to investigate the stalling i have been experiencing. In case some of you forgot, i have the roadrunner service(toshiba cable modem) which connects to the router where 3 pcs are connected up. I have been experiencing 'stalling' quite often(every 3mins, lasts around 20 secs). I decided to take out the router and just hook up one of my pcs directly to the cable modem....no more stalling. So the router is what is causing the stalling.....does anyone have any ideas as to why this may be happening? Any help would be great....thanks everyone.
(i tried to give each pc its own unique ip address in 'networking' in control panel of windows, instead of 'obtain ip automatically', but once i would change it to an ip like 192.168.xxx.xxx i would not be able to connect to the net anymore. )
Update: I also have the newest firmware for the router, 1.39
Would enabling DMZ possibly solve this problem? To be quite honest, i could careless if i have a firewall up(that is probably not a smart thing to do, but i would prefer to get this thing to stop stalling).
SYSTEM:
CPU: AMD T-Bird 1ghz@1.2ghz(12.0 x 100fsb)
MOBO: Abit KT7-Raid with voltage mod
MEMORY: 256mb(2 x 128mb) Kingston PC133mhz
HARDDRIVES: 2 IBM 75GXP's 80gigs(in RAID 0)
OS: Windows 2000 Professional
NETWORK INFO:
INTERNET PROVIDER: Roadrunner(Fairfax, Va)
CABLE MODEM: Toshiba PCX1100U
ROUTER: Linksys BEFSR41 - EtherFast 4-Port Cable/DSL Router
NIC CARD: 3Com EtherLink XL 10/100 PCI NIC
Ok, ill re-flash the new firmware. I am assuming there are no issues with the new firmware, so once i flash it, and if the problem continues, i will assume its not the firmware.
Now, i have read something on a few different occasions and i am confused. Tell me if this is correct. I read somewhere that if you go into each of the pcs and assign them ips of 192.168.xxx.xxx and gateway 255.255.255.000 that it will resolve the problem of the stalling. Can i do this even though i am using a router? I tried to do it to one of my pc's, but i was unable to connect to the net. Is this at all possible, since the router is assigning ip's to the pcs?
As far as applying IP addresses to your computers, that is probably the best setup, BUT, you also have to go into your routers admin page, and turn off DHCP on the LAN side.
If you didn't turn off dhcp on the lan side, then you won't be able to connect.
Leave it enabled on the WAN side though.
Forgot to add this, you also have to set the LAN IP of the router in your pc's Gateway adddress.
I don't know what it is for the Linky, but my netgear is: 192.168.0.1
You may also have to enable DNS, and input a dns server address, as well as the domain name of your ISP.
thanks VonJames...
i have a strange feeling that if i do this, the stalling/freezing will be gone. So i want to shut off the DHCP for the lan side, gotcha!
Do you have a linksys router? if so, do you know where the option might be located? I am at work right now, and was just wondering if this option is 'in the open' and not called something else! thanks again.....
hehehe...
as you can see, i am very eager to learn more about this problem...hehehe. Yea, i have been into the browser admin control panel. A good bit of options are in there, but not too many.
So i am going to need the domain name of the isp? i am going to call roadrunner here at work, and get that information. Should i get any other information from them, that i might need? (the only things they gave me were a login/password for email, the pop/smtp locations: pop-server.cox.rr.com/smtp-server.cox.rr.com ).
Let me know if i should ask for other info that might be helpful!! thanks again vonjames!
The DNS entry for your pc's, is probably something simple like:
roadrunner.com
The "host" name would be whatever you named your pc, like "bob" or something.
Perhaps someone more familiar with the Linksys & roadrunner service could chime in with more concrete data, because I have no idea what the Linksys admin setup looks like.
I'm using a netgear with @home currently, and it's a little different than RR.
not exactly sure if you wanna look at this, but on page 20 of the user manual they have what the admin panel looks like: ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pdf/befsr11&befsr41ug.pdf
it is kinda hard to see, but this manual does explain a lot of the features...i know you dont have time to look this over so i will try to figure out exactly what i am lookin for!
Before we get started here, you need to find out some information.
Hook up your main pc to your cable modem the way it originally was before getting a router. Set your TCP/IP setting to dhcp, etc..., and reboot.
Once in windows, open a dosprompt window, and type : ipconfig /all
You should see your domain name and the ip address of your DNS server. Jot down that info.
Now, hook your router back up to your pc changing the necessary details to connect to your admin page.
Ok, in the admin page for your router, on your WAN, leave dhcp enabled to obtain an IP address automatically from your ISP.
Disable dhcp on your Lan, and according to instructions, make sure your router has a static IP of: 192.168.1.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
What I don't know is how RR is setup for your router. @home is slightly different, so that, I can't tell you.
In the TCP/IP properties of the pc's on your Lan:
Give each a different IP address like : 192.168.1.2 , 192.168.1.3 , and so on.
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
The Default gateway will be: 192.168.1.1
In the DNS section, for host: type in your pc's name, then in the domain window, put: roadrunner.com (i guess)
For the DNS server address, put in the address you obtained at the beginning of this post. (you'll need at least one)
Workgroup names for all the pc's needs to be the same.
Hopefully, this will get you most of the way there.
As to the pdf file you posted, the pictures weren't clear, but I could read the text. Pages 36 through part of 41, i believe are the pages to be most concerned with.
PPoE shouldn't have anything to do with you, that should be for DSL service.
hey vonjames...
just wanted to let you know you were right...everything you said seems to have worked, and i no longer get the stalling/freezing that i was experiencing from before!
Can you do me a favor though? i have been talking to lobo about this test http://speedtest.umnet.umich.edu/ , he has been telling me that i should be getting speeds close to 50-60 times faster than a 56k modem......is that correct? what speeds do you get? how many times faster than a 56k modem?
here is a snipet of what my area roadrunner provides:
Road Runner is LIGHTNING fast, delivering web pages and other Internet material to your computer at speeds up to 50 times faster than a 28.8 kbps dial-up modem. Experience speeds of up to 1,500 kbps downstream and up to 192 kbps upstream. You'll spend your time surfing, not waiting for pages to download. For the first time, it makes sense to use video, audio, animation, and virtual reality on the Internet. In other words, Road Runner lets you enjoy surfing the Internet.
I think this is due to the fact that my area still has not gotten DIGITAL CABLE....which will be put in next month. Does this sound correct to you? I imagine once digital cable is put in, i will be able to get faster speeds..correct?(probably will have to pay more for my cable internet access too, considering i only pay 25 bucks right now).
I took a look at your other thread, and Lobo is on top of things there. He has more experience than I with the modem tweaking, and right on the money about the cap.
Personally, I don't see where the digital service would have anything to do with your internet speed, I think it's all cap related.
I think they could turn up your speeds if they really wanted to.
But, more speed = more $$$
