virtual memory
virtual memory
im useing 512mb
2100 ddr and have set my, virtual memory as 1024 min and max. is this best setting?
I agree with that, you have ample ram, so you don't need a big swap file.
Set it at 50MB if you like or 20MB, or 100MB, but 1024 is way too high. just in case you ever need it to grow bigger than 64MB for some reason, set the min to 64 and max to whatever freespace is left on the drive. That way the min never gets fragged, and the max (if used) gets deleted every boot.

it doesnt say that,i member it said that in WINME but all i can do is set min and max paging file, thas all it saysOriginally posted by Norm
No click on "Let me specify my own....." then you'll see a box to check off "disable, (not recommended), don't worry about it, windows just wants to own you![]()
Will Work For FSB
You can't disable the Page File in Windows 2000
the best you can do is go down to the lowest it will allow...
I have 512MB of RAM
and on mine it says Minimum allowed: 2MB
So the best i could do to disable it is set it at 2MB for min and max
I have my min and max set at 768MB with 512MB of ram
better safe then sorry...
i've come across problems where i haven't had enough VM for some applications, but with 768MB no problems what so ever, runs real nice...
of course I have the hard drive space to spare for this, so if you don't, I recommend a minimum of 256MB min and max

With 9X/ME....if you're over 256 megs...ideally over 384....you can pretty much have your OS not use virtual mem...which no matter how much RAM you have, default settings the OS will tap into it.
System.ini:
[386Enh]
ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1
It's a documented setting from MS.
Still leave your VM settings default. Also another good tweak was to let yourself specify the settings, and have the min and max the same...this way your OS won't cut into gameplay adjusting VM settings on the fly if you let it manage it. Wide variety of theories on what to set it to....basically 2 - 2.5 times your system ram.....until you get VM past 768 or so because if you have sys RAM past 256 megs...no need to really start setting it higher. Having it too large is really just a waste of HD space, and it eats into performance. Setting swap file usage to conservative tells the OS to basically "Keep stuffing data into system ram....cut back on using the hard drive RAM will ya?" Every time you use your swap file (Hard drive hits), you impact performance, because naturally using the VM is slower than using sys RAM.
With NT/2K, the old rule of thumb with NT 4.0 was total system ram....plus 12...with a scope of 50 for min and max. Additional programs dictate changing this...(ID Exchange or SQL products) depending on the programs, combined with careful monitoring of taskman and even viewer. Getting NT optimal on VM usage is trickier than 9X, but getting it right can lead to great gains.
