DSL and cable :-/

Post by Anime-loo »

yes i know u have many topics like this but heres a new one

i just posted a few days ago that i was ganna get cable but i found someone provideing DSL in my area and i wanted to know witch would be best for my set up and wat each would offer

1) i want a stable connection and a static ip #
2) im ganna be doin alot of online gameing so a low ping time would be best
3) im ganna be uploading alot of stuff to the net for a site

ok my comp stats are

p3 800 mhz 133 bus
128 ram
Windows 2k pro

i figure thats all thats needed :)

also my connecting sould be always on here are the stats form the providers

DSL - on dsl reports everyone seemed happy with this company

for $50 a month i would get
128k up
700k down
static ip

its a Adsl

for cable- id have to go with road runner

for $40 a month i would get
300k up
1 meg down
dynamic ip (not sure about static)

so witch sounds best to u for wat ill be doin on my comp? :)

it all depends on the caps. cable has faster downloads but slow uploads. Check with the cable and dsl providers and ask what thier caps are. Most of the time dsl will be better for online gaming   :rotfl:

In my area, cable has far faster down and uploads, most of my friends and setups I've done are around 3000 down, from 300 to 740 up. DSL is usually 700 - 900 down, 90 - 110 up.

DSL with the local phone company sucks for performance, and pings, so cable is better in that aspect. However, DSL with a good quality ISP like I have blows away cable for online playing in the ping area. Also DSL is distant dependent, cable is not. If you live far from the CO, your performance on DSL can suffer.

But again, depends on who you use for your ISP, and your area, as everyone is different.

No answer is cast in stone here.

DSL in my experience is usually better if you are a gamer and wat low latency. I always see cable for those who download alot, because cable download speeds can be, in some cases, faster than DSL. My DSL is 1500/384, which is plenty for downloading and gaming. My ping times to a local server are around 20, and to far away servers around 80-90.

BTW- Have you checked to see if SpeakEasy is available in your area- http://www.speakeasy.net? They have several packages, including some for gamers, and are rated at the top at DSLR.

id go with Cable personally. I have cable in Columbus, Ohio and my uploads and downloads speeds are real good and my ping rate is usually in the 80's . My friend who has DSL in Atlanta usually has a ping of around 75 , but his speeds arent as good.

I'd recommend cable, given its a residential situation. Cable networks typically offer lower latency (lower pings, good for gaming).

Cheers

Ahhh your memory serves you well my friend, yes after 7 months I'm still a bit sour . Settled for DSL from a small isp who has some very awsome customer services, and was nice enough to have a Co located 3 blocks away

I too would say cable. For me, cable seems to work very well. There is always a lot of bandwidth available, and I usually don't get slowed down during high traffic times. Ping rates are very good at around 60-80 ms.

Gee ! If your price is in US money it is very expensive !!

Here in Québec Canada, we have a big fight between two providers (Bell and Videotron) and it is good for us, the consumers.

DSL by Bell telephone cie : 29.95 $can/month plus 10$can/month for the modem. Speed 1Mo. Actual promotion: free installation, 1st month free (fee and modem)

DSL by aei internet : 25$can for connect charge +
29.95$can/month, internal modem is 195$can , speed 1 à 1.5 Mo

Cable by Videotron : regular price 39.95$can/month reduce actually to 29.95$can/month, cable modem is 160$can, speed is ????

the thing about america, this refers to cable not dsl, is that it would be worse for consumers if there was major competition, with the inadequate cable infastructure that is in place competition and users on multiple providers would overload it and cause major downtime, prices would come down for sure though, and that would be just one more reason for ISP's not to upgrade their servers

Go with Road Runner Cable, I used to have DSL 768/768 but got more like 550/550 , got Road Runner Cable for half the price $39 a month for 2mb download and 300k upload and it's great for gaming, on most servers I have the lowest ping, downloads 250-350kbps a sec average, 180 meg file took me 12 min to dowload, go with cable and there is no contract unlike DSL most of them want to own you for a year at least, good thing I went with Cable no regrets here, cya. :D :D :D
