I have cable with charter and they close the port needed to ping people. So baasically if i play a game my ping shows up ans none, 0 or 1000. Does anyone know what the prper term of this is? Neone know a way to bypass it?? there was a way to uncap, theres gotta be a way to be able to open the ports to ping.

well, it seems doubtful that you would be able to open a port that they have closed...

are you sure that they have shut off ICMP? it sounds strange that they would... you should confirm it with them if you havent already...

also, do you have any firewall programs running? maybe they are set to block pings?

ICMP??

No firewall, i am positive, i called in and they said they have closed the ports due to "Security Purposes" Only way you oculd ping is byt getting their biseness package.

Either there are securtiy problems, or it is a way for people not to be servers and pay more money.

That is wierd because I have Charter and when I had 512 down and 256 up my ping port was open. I could see my ping fine. I now have thier bussiness package (paying out the ass for it) and I still have my ping port open. I don't know I live in Mass maybe it is different with the location.

YEAH THAT IS WHAT SUX... Everyone in the same town i live, an many CT people have this. I can tell becaause i can only ping people that have charter as well. In Red Alert 2 i occasionally see(rarely) see people with good pings and when i ask them, they live in CT. All other people have faster connection then people in CT and have ping ports open.

Charter from what others have said in here does in a majority of its service area BLOCK icmp traffic which can cause problems for gaming. There are ways to get around this little annoyance but no gaurantee in low latency (tunneling may not be the best choice... but it would work period). For one: Charter sucks period, the speed to price ratio is awful, and reliablity.. looks to be worse than Verizon DSL. Two: Charter should not block ICMP traffic to its USERS (ICMP pings directed to its routers, fine!) computers as they pay their money for the service and it should work like any other ISP, and fi not they should tell people before they sign up (and I KNOW they do not do this!, otherwise they would already be out of business). Charter is stupid and will continue to be until something is done about it. US law allows for lawsuits much more easily then up here where I live in Canada, so go sue them! (just kidding with ya :) )
